We are getting a project to be shot on RED at 4K 2:1 for a 3hrs feature film out.
It will be edited in FCP with AJA kona 3 card,Grading in Color and 2K out?
Footage will be of around 5 hours.
What capacity drive is required with mirroring ?

What are you being given? R3d files? DPX files? And what exactly are you doing with them (i.e., are you the film recording facility, DI facility, color correction facility, etc.)?

Hi,
We will be RAW R3d files from Red?We will do the edit and also the grading and will send to a film recording facility for final print.

I'm still not clear on what exactly you'll need to store. If you're doing an edit, and color correction, what exactly will you send to the film recording facility? DPX? It is very likely that you'll have at least a 10:1 ratio (probably considerably more) for what was shot vs. your 3 hour running time. So if you have, say, a 20:1 ratio, you'll have about 60 hours of raw footage. At about 100GB/hour (rough figure for R3d files), that amounts to about 10 hours per terabyte, or 6 TB. You'll then have to render the final version, which at 2K will amount to approx. 1 TB per hour of 2K footage, so that's another 3 TB. You'll need additional space for various other renders and additional material, so I would figure about double the minimal amount. That would mean 6TB+3TB*2, or 18TB. If you want to be able to play those rendered files to check them, you'll need a system (storage and computer) that will allow at least 270MB/sec sustained.

Does that help?

Hi,
We will be sending DPX out to the lab.I had a talk with the director and he said for his 3 hr movie he will give us around 10hrs of footage to work on.
For speed factor we are looking at Caldigit HDpro or make a Raid by buying enclosures such as Sonnet.Your views ..

Wow... a 3:1 shooting ratio. What kind of movie is this?

The R3Ds will be around 320GB or so. I know this because I shot 3 hours the other week and it filled a Red Drive.

From there, you need to work out what you will do with it. If you edit the reference files you won't need much additional space until you start color timing.

Depends on the REDCODE mode - but I'd want a couple of TB handy at least. Wouldn't want to get caught short, and if someone tells me they're giving me 10 hours, I expect 15. If someone tells me they're giving me 10 hours for a 3 hour finished product, I laugh :)

Capacity??

Capacity??

Hi,
Okay lets make it 20hrs footage for a 3 hrs finished project...Now how much capacity drive required for final out to DPX????

R3D is "36MB" or 36MB per second. This is 130GB/hr for the source. DPX files at 2K are 8MB per frame for 10 bit RGB. At 24fps this is 8*24 or 192 MB/sec or roughly 700GB per hour. A minimum of 2TB for source, 3TB for the DPX files, and then the intermediate files as well. With mirroring figure on 18-20TBytes.

As for the source, bits are "free" so you will find much more source than anyone expected.
