  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What are you guys doing for hard drive / storage management?

I've been looking into raid, nas servers, raid controller cards, LTO drives, enterprise level hard drives over the last few days trying to learn as much as I can about it. This stuff gets very expensive.

I got four 3tb hard drives, for 12tb. I got two 256gb SSD drives. Trying to figure out the best hard drive/editing setup. I got a PC.

your 3tb hard drives go in a raid0 USB3 enclosure. your OS/programs go on the SSD. easily upgradeable / switching out hard drives this way.

If you know about LTO, your know RAID0 can be dangerous. Suggest OS/Programs on SSD1, mirrored to SSD2. RAID5 for redundancy. You'd end up with a 9TB drive that can lose one whole disk without loss. I'd look for a RAID controller card and keep it in the computer if you have enough space, otherwise, there are plenty of external options. USB3 isn't really smoking compared to a PCIe hardware RAID5, especially after you taste the SSD speeds. NOTE: If your motherboard is SATAII, SATAIII SSD's won't mean a damn, save some money there. Also, hope you didn't get GREEN or other power saving drives, the power features are not ideal for RAID.
