  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

along with the .rdm folder, there is a digital.magazine.profile and a digital.magdynamic.profile

what are they and what do they do? I've been dismissing them.

Brandon -

the digital.magazine.profile is exactly that - a profile of the digital magazine -

<RedParameters>
<Profile>
<Type>magazine</Type>
<Version>1.0</Version>
</Profile>
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.REEL" type="integer" value="5" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.FRAME_RATE" type="text" value="23.98" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.DROPFRAME" type="boolean" value="false" />
<Param name="MEDIA.RAW.PROJECT_FRAME_RATE" type="text" value="23.98" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.ENCODING" type="text" value="REDCODE" />
<Param name="MEDIA.RAW.PROJECT_RESOLUTION" type="text" value="Full Sensor" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.COMPRESSION" type="text" value="RAW" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.QUALITY" type="text" value="REDCODE36" />
<Param name="MEDIA.HDSDI.PROJECT_FRAME_RATE" type="text" value="23.98" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.OWNER" type="text" value="" />
<Param name="MEDIA.HDSDI.PROJECT_RESOLUTION" type="text" value="1080" />
<Param name="MEDIA.HDSDI.PROJECT_ENCODING" type="text" value="RGB-progressive" />
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.PROJECT.RESOLUTION" type="text" value="4K2:1" />
</RedParameters>

you can remove that media from the camera and put it back on the camera - and the camera will see that information -

so, for example - we often PRE FORMAT our CF cards on some shoots. We'll take more than enough CF cards to get through the shoot - put tape (or a PTouch label) on each with a sequential number.

At the start of the day - we format each CF card - one at a time - format, eject, insert next CF card, repeat - so, each card has a digimag # that matches the tape/label on the CF card.

that's what this is:

<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.REEL" type="integer" value="5" />

Now, while shooting - the ACs just eject and shove the next CF card in. No formatting while shooting.

This works great for us on CF only shoots - problematic when one is going to mix CF and Drives - and you may switch with no real sequence - but we've done that as well -

the digital.magdynamic.profile currently keeps track of edgecode -

<RedParameters>
<Profile>
<Type>magdynamic</Type>
<Version>1.0</Version>
</Profile>
<Param name="MEDIA.DIGMAG.NEXT_EDGECODE" type="text" value="01:00:37:20" />
</RedParameters>

** interesting to note that the camera ID (A,B,C) is NOT stored in the digital.magazine.profile - so, I have not tried this - but I think if a card or drive is for exmaple #5 - like the profile above - and you stuck it in a camera with the ID of "B" you'd get B005 - stick it in a camera with the ID of "A" you'd get A005 - need to try that !!

You're right, that's what it does, it just checks the camera id's settings to decide the leading letter.

thanks guys, so its nt something thats going to screw up the image in anyway if I ignore it, or don't copy it over with the footage right?

No - it does NOT effect your R3D files.

Someone told me that the Log & Transfer plug in uses the files for FCP - not sure - we don't use log & transfer tool as there are much more efficient ways to get in and out of FCP.

But ... "best practice" is - IMHO - to keep ALL files that come off of CF or RED DRIVE - think of it as your "digital negative" - don't alter it (making new QT wrappers for example) - don't delete anything, etc. - until it is ALL archived on a protection drive or LTO.

You should have an exact copy of what came off the camera exactly as it came off the camera.
