  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What are Raven power options?

Hi guys,

I have looked all around the forums but still have not found a conclusive answer to this. What are the options for powering the Raven? Can we use some smaller batteries such as Redvolts on the actual body to keep the size down? So far what I am seeing is that the Raven will only work with V mount batteries which can be powered via a batter clip, or on camera module.

Is my understanding correct? I really hope there is a smaller batter available such as the redvolt so I can keep the size and weight to a minimum.

So far in my cart, I have:

Raven Brain
DSMC2 touch LCD
120GB mini mag
Mini mag reader

I feel like all i need is a battery and I am set to go.

Thank you!

The Raven brain does not have any power input. So you will need a module. Right now you can use the I/O with/without V-mount, the Redvolt Expander, the JetPack or the XL Module. In the future they might make the DSMC2 side handle with some way of having a battery inside (so it might be the smallest rig).
Also there are now 3rd parties that are manufacturing dsmc2 modules, such as the OMOD series. But they will probably come with vmount/gold mount.

Addendum: Each of these modules have pros and cons such as price, performace, I/O options, weight etc. Some make it lighter but then does not give you any option for of I/O. So you will need to see what are your needs (using external monitor? Going to be more on a drone/gimbal? More on your shoulder?) and then make the call.
Hope this helps

Omar, you can't power the RAVEN or any Weapon model camera without one of the base expander modules. Sounds like the base expander with V mount is about the only other accessory you require to power up the camera.

I'm a little unclear on this but it may be possible to get the less expensive Jetpack expander and either use the RED AC wall power connection, or buy a cable like this from wodencmra and plug in to a D-TAP connection on a battery like this ... or even the belt clip from RED is a possibility but I haven't explored that option yet.

There's also the possibility woodncmra will have a module with different mount setups for battery.

Probably not much in the way of specifics here but instead, a few options to consider.

While we are on the topic... can someone confirm for me that the power inputs on the new DSMC2 modules are the same as on DSMC1. In other words, can I plug the LEMO output from my current RED power accessories and run my DSMC2 camera? Thanks.

Terry, nothing definitive here, but I think I recall sometime around NAB, someone saying the Weapon uses less power than the Epic. If so, I would assume that is the case across all lines and that previous lemos would work. I think it may even be possible to use RED ONE power on Weapon, but don't quote me on that speculation.

Someone send up the Phil bat signal.

Indeed!

I think you are right about power consumption. I recall reading that the DSMC2 pulls about 50 watts vs.the 60 or so watts of the Scarlet/Epic. But, my question is whether I can plug my old power supply modules (via LEMO cable, not the body mounted ones like the original RV-XL module) and power the new camera.

This really does require a Phil massage... I just noticed on wc that they have a D-TAP Weapon cable for power and a D-TAP to Epic/Scarlet/Dragon cable for power. They are different lengths and cable size so maybe they just haven't updated their description of the old cable to include Weapon... or maybe they are different otherwise.

Hello,

Sorry if the question sounds silly, but do we need a Red brick (or any external battery) to power on the Raven with a Base I/o Vlock package ? Or does it already have an internal battery somewhere.

No internal power. Needs an external battery.

You don't need the expander, you can mount a battery plate directly to the brain. The XL module has a power connector so that you can connect the AC adaptor to it. I thought I would remove my base IO and just use the battery plate, but so far I have left it on.

Do we have confirmation on how wide the batteries can be on the V-Mount i/o module?

I have 4x batteries and am concerned they won't fit.

Whoa! Was not aware of the battery plate option. Thanks Stacey.

I've always had great results with Switronix products. I will probably get a few of their v mounts for the Raven.

I've seen multiple threads from the past of people using Power u 130w v mounts. Super affordable, and reliable according to other redusers. I would get those new slim Switronix batteries or AB cine V mount if budget wasn't an issue. Because the deal on Power U is such a steal I feel like I'm doing something wrong by going after them instead of the brand name V mounts lol

I'll check those out. Thanks.

I don't the Raven has a an audio input so if you want to get audio into the body don't you need one of the expander modules?
