What Am I Doing Wrong?

Hi Kevin.
The funny looking clip is 4K 2:1, which is what I chose for the project format.
I tried outputting to 1080 and 720 Quicktimes, both motion Jpeg A and B as well as H.264 and DVCPro. Same result each time (see pic at beginning of post)
It looks great it Redcine and plays fine (although not full frame rate obviously) Just gets funny on export.
Did you guys check out the log file?
Weird how it did not work on either machine but suddenly was OK on the Macbook. I'll try deleting and reinstalling, but I'm shooting the next few days so it will have to be this weekend.
Besides the app file and the Library file, what other files/folders do I need to delete in OS X for a clean reainstall?

I would just steer clear of saving anything in the REDCINE folder in the library so you can delete the whole thing and reinstall fresh, this seems to give the most consistent results. There are bugs with QT export and they happen for no good reason, although sometimes if you have your project settings different from your camera settings, or other conflicting settings it confuses the app and causes weirdness. New versions are looking good as I've been testing regularly and they will be out soon.

I have a lot of problems with REDCINE too, but some of my problems are gone after using a small application made by Anders Holck, called REDCINE RESET.
Try it. Maybe it helps. One of the big problems with REDCINE is that the program remembers the last things you did, but you can´t see it in the interface. Have you seen the gamma settings under ITU709? It says 2.4 by default but when you change the colorspace and then turn back to ITU 709,you get the correct gamma setting 2.2.
This still happens after using the application from Anders but at least you are reseting the program.

I'm having a new problem now, as I try to make a single TIFF frame in Redcine. The program shows a crazy corrupted looking frame, and the resulting TIFF looks flat and negative. Weird.
HD export seems better though.

It IS pretty crazy. The camera is soooooo nice but I feel like they've failed us on the back end. Redcine is very unstable on both my Intel Macs. redalert does not do enough (plus I think it was meant just as a stopgap anyway)
It took Apple YEARS with a giant staff and millions to make FCP NOT a piece of junk... it really was not useable until 4.5. And it still needs rendering sometimes. I had a Media 100 in 1997 that NEVER needed to render anything.
I'm just not sure that Redcine will ever get there. And that will SEVERELY limit the rentability of my camera.
I'm not even an editor. I just want proof of concept that any editor anywhere can download this software and work on footage I shot with my Red.
This is why I keep harping on a hardware solution. If there was a Red Box that would do all the cross-conversions with hardware processing, I'd buy it. I bet a lot of people would. That's why my Media 100 could do fast, render free editing in 1997 and FCP still could not accomplish that in 2007. HARDWARE. It's pricey but some of us are professionals.
I'll be patient here, and keep reinstalling and trying, but the problems seem so random I'm just not confident that this iteration of the program will ever be useable.

please forget that pricey means professionel, your clients can use now redalert without problems, redcine is still in BETA...but a lot people can use REDCINE for their projects...

we are on the bleeding edge...money can wash the problems away...but creativity and a little patience can do too.

your Problems will be solved sooner as you think...have patience.

What kind of proof-of-concept do you want? I know, at this point, probably a dozen facilities that are successfully doing RED-centric post-production from editorial to finish.

Traditionally, dedicated hardware is used at the leading edge of technology when dedicated hardware is really the only way to get things done. I believe that the RED curve is so fast that by the time a dedicated hardware box was built, tested, and ready - it would be long-obsolete.

Harry - it has been mentioned that your problem is most likely a memory thingamabob that is fixed with more recent internal versions that are still undergoing testing. I'm not sure that repeating your test over and over again is going to help anything...

I'm frustrated...but I don't know if I'd go that far. I think Red Cine is fantastic. Every part about it so far is awesome. Only two things: I can't render ANY quicktimes and that is a major major problem and it doesn't render as fast as I would really like it to. But those issues can be fixed.

I just really wish they would release the next build of this software so that I can actually DO something with my footage cause RedAlert just DOES NOT cut it.

Luki, I know that I can send many of my high-end clients to a facility like Mark's offhollywood to do the traditional film-style workflow. But I also have many clients who right now love my HDX-900 with Pro-35 shooting to tape and Firestore. They can ingest and work with the P2 files right away. Red's workflow seems like they could do the same, but both redalert and redcine are so buggy I'm not sure I'd recommend it yet to these smaller clients. I'd spend half my time on the next client's job troubleshooting the LAST client's post problems. Keep in mind that these are jobs so small I have to "sell" them on the HDX and Pro-35. The "proof of concept" to me means being able to work with the files on my BRAND NEW macs I bought just to be in compliance with Red's hardware requirements.
And remember that in the world of commercials, a lot of this is driven by agency people who are famous for having just enough knowledge to be dangerous. If they get a whiff of Red being more difficult they will drive the bus somewhere else.
And I disagree about a hardware encoder being obsolete. Personal computers are designed to do many things, none of them super efficient. Dedicated boxes can be designed to do one thing very fast and efficient. And it can be made firmware or hardware upgradable.

True. But the market for RED conversion is a very small market, numbers-wise. The cost of designing, troubleshooting, certifying, and releasing a single-purpose dedicated hardware box like this would make the pricing beyond the reach of most of the people who wanted it.

I guess I'm just wishing that the post process was as mature as the camera. When I got mine, build 13 with the new mount, it really was shoot-ready. I still wish for my EVF, the QR-RED from Anton Bauer, and multiple video outs, but those things are on the way and the fact is the camera works and is pretty bulletproof. I could work around those limitations no problem, tomorrow.
Just my own personal lack of success with the post workflow makes me a little skittish about pushing the camera on those smaller clients right now.
I'm sure it will get better.

So, here's what I've discovered about the strange quicktime exports.

The key for me is the setting "Process" in the Output menu.

If I set "Process" to "Full" and output, I get the crazy blurred, black & white, quicktime as described & shown in the thread above.

BUT, if I set "Process" to "Standard" or "Draft" and output, it works fine.

I am using a new 20" iMac with ATI 2400 video card, which I am suspecting could have something to do with our problems.

Thanks Dukemovie, I switched Process to Standard and it's worked, except now I'm getting freeze frames on a shot at 519 frames in.

RedAlert crashes with anything other than 2:1. OK. Redcine is buggy making HD Quicktimes and cannot make TIFFs. OK.
Delete, reinstall. Throw out the pref files. OK. Done. Start over. It worked! OK, next shots. CRASH.
"Oh, you need the Mac with THIS video card. I know, last week the other one worked. Sorry."
Reinstall. Client calls. Why can't we use last week's footage? Sorry, don't know. It's "Beta"!
