  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What am I doing wrong? (FCP render problem)

In FCP, I bring my footage in using LOG & TRANSFER, and I drop clips into my timeline. I render so I can watch the clips and edit them.

When I make a second video track and try to "stack" the clips, so that I can edit back and forth between them in real time, each time I cut something, or even try to switch back and forth between them, it makes me RE-RENDER whatever is not on the top layer. Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't I be able to simply LOOK at the footage without re-rendering each time?

Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks for any help.

First, this sound like what FCP is supposed to do...

Secondly: have you set RT to "unlimited"?

third: Hva you tried working with the cam-proxies. They're really sweet, you know...

When I used to edit footage shot on an XL1 or a DVX100 (or the equivalent), I could stack a few tracks, cut out the middle of one of them, and see the underlying track in the empty space between (on playback).

With RED footage, it makes me RE-RENDER that piece in the middle.... That is where I am confused.

Just trying to clarify.

Yeah, what Gregory said. You shouldn't have to render anything at all if you've logged and transferred properly. Check your work with the workflow white paper that came with the software downloads from the RED support page.

In log and transfer check your PREFERENCES.

This will determine how you transcode your R3D files.

For ProRes HQ you'll need dedicated sata drives or firewire drives.

Drop clip in the timeline and say yes ( assuming you have fcp 6 or 7 )
