  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What About Accessories for SCARLET?

Just to put things in perspective:

These following prices, of items I suspect will be included in the SCARLET FIXED package, were taken from Jim Jannard's post. Notice that the SCARLET FIXED brain isn't included (or the lens for that matter!): http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?60950-Significant-Update...

Product .................................... OLD PRICE ... NEW PRICE

SIDE SSD MODULE ........................ $1500 ....... $1500
DSMC Side Handle ........................ $950 ....... $1,750
RED Touch LCD 5" ........................ $1,600 .... $1,950
REDmote ..................................... $550 ....... $750
REDVolt .................................................. ...... $195
DSMC Travel Charger ........................................ $125

Makes a total of: ............................................ $6,270

If what have been said recently about the complete SCARLET FIXED package price point - 6K USD - still remains...then I'm speechless!!! If the final price ends up being more than that...I'm still speechless :D

I guess you won't get the DSMC Side Handle in Scarlet-F package.

You'll get the brain, the side SSD module, the Red touch LCD 5'', a REDVolt & a DSMC Charger for about 7 000 USD.
Maybe you'll get a REDmote too but not sure at all...

Here it is an estimation of a starter kit :

- 1 x RED Scarlet-F package (Scarlet F brain, side SSD module, Red Touch LCD 5'', REDVolt & travel charger, (REDmote ?) : 7 050 $*
- 1 X DSMC Side Handle : 950 $
- 2 x SSD 64 gb : 1 900 $
- 1 x RED top handle : 175 $
- 1 x RED Station RED Mag 1.8'' : 250 $

10 325 $ (updated 07/14) .

*Estimated price

Yes, you may be completely right! The side handle wasn't included in the package that was presented back in the day.

I know this isn't official at all, but when asked about the package Ted has mentioned numerous times when presenting the SCARLET in interviews (lately all kitted out with the SSD side module, side handle, touch lcd, redmote) that what he was holding in his hands was considered a nice working configuration (by RED I presume) - so that's where I draw my assumptions (dangerous, I KNOW! :D But one can always hope for a(nother) miracle!).

Regardless if the side handle is included or not, it's still an amazing offer! :)

I must admit Im a little heartbroken about that $10k estimated price.... I really wanted it to stay around the $6k range for the package Ted has been holding at the shows and add another $1-2k for cards and such.

I know $10k still an amazing price for what you get but Its just slowly but surely inching its way out of my price range and I fear that by the time its released it'll be way out of my financial grasp.

RED, I know prices have to go up sometimes but damn this is far from the 3k for $3k you guys taunted in the beginning. And yet.....

I still want one more then ever! :drool5:

"3K for $3K" was another time - another camera. RED has since then changed a LOT about the camera and they've also stated that they are aiming the camera at the professional segment - or the people who are ready to move in to that segment. That also means that you need to have a budget for professional gear.

Even though SCARLET is a cheap camera for what it actually can do, it's not a cheap camera system for the everyday man. People really need to realize this, or else I'm afraid that some people will get somewhat disappointed if they only realize this AFTER they bought the main package - not realizing what they've gotten themselves into really (financially).

The SCARLET will NO DOUBT be an AWESOME camera. And I completely understand why so many people want this camera - but even when the camera was only 3K, you'd still need to get some extras to get a full working system - not to mention the accessories and ad-on's that you also might want to equip the camera with. It would still end up being a big investment.

I personally don't have a problem with the price going up - just for the main package! I'd completely understand why!

At the end of the day you have to understand that RED is a company who makes high end professional motion picture cameras - one of their HUGE ambitions is to give as many as possible the chance to tell their stories with state of the art equipment at an affordable cost - and of course they have to charge you something for these amazing cameras - BUT, I really have a feeling though that Jim, would he be able to, would want to hand these out as candy (that would kill RED though, and no one wants that!) :)

I think they will probably offer two packages for Scarlet-F:
1) DSMC - Body (with SSD Module standard of course), Side Handle, 5" LCD, REDVOLT, Travel Charger, 64GB REDMAG, RED Station REDMAG
2) Cinema - Body (with SSD Module), REDMOTE, 5" LCD, 64 GB REDMAG, RED Station REDMAG (for external power)

I'm thinking the REDMOTE and SIDEHANDLE will be targeted at two different users, so the DSMC and CINEMA package names take that approach.

Thoughts?

I have a feeling that there won't be any packages with SSD's and REDMAG stations included. The reason for this is that not everyone needs the Redmag station - maybe some already has one or more. Also, I think people would rather be able to choose for themselves which SSD redmag GB-size fits their needs the best - and there's also the possibility that some might still stick to CF (with the CF-adapter).

I also have a feeling that REDmote will be default with SCARLET-F - it just seems incomplete without it somehow, can't really explain it, haha :D

Yeah, maybe they'll leave you the choice of either with or without the Side Handle - would make sense for some I guess :)

...But how exactly would you power the SCARLET without the side handle (with a power supply of course, but...) with the Red Station Redmag? I not sure I understand.

Since most Cinema users are using external power, not including REDVOLTS and a SIDE HANDLE made a lot of sense to me. I agree about not necessarily needing a 64GB REDMAG, I guess that was wishful thinking. Jarred did say the CF Adapter was "optional," so if you want to go with CF you'll need to by the adapter to interface with the SSD Side Module.

I think the Side Handle has a lot of functionality we haven't seen yet, and when combined with the 5" Touchscreen LCD, could perform as well or better than the REDMOTE. Thus, it seems like the REDMOTE only really gains your portability and multi-cam control, something a solid iPhone/iPad app could give you. Now, the REDMOTE Pro is a different story...

I just posted a question about including the RED STATION here, curious to see if the Gig-E port was sufficient enough or even if the RED STATION is a necessary accessory, like the travel charger for the REDVOLT Battery.

KO

...On second thought, I don't really believe that RED is interested in selling the SCARLET without the side handle. I really think that they are very passionate about the concept and sheer power of working with the DSMC system, and compromising that with excluding the side handle seems like a step back to me. I mean, if you don't want to use the side handle - then just take it off. That's the whole point of the system :D

Just my thought :)

Btw. if you do not have a Redmag Station for your media, you will no doubt need to get one. I really don't think the Gig-E was designed to support transfer of your SSD-recordings - but I honestly haven't got a clue. Maybe someone can confirm this...?
