I had this idea for a separate piece of hardware that would transcode R3D to any format standard format using the RED Rocket™ Card internally. Obviously, this wouldn't be cheap, but $6000 to $7000 might be a possible MSRP.

The coolest option would be incorporating the module on to EPIC so that it could transcode in real-time to ProRes 4:4:4:4 2K.

I don't get it. A computer with RED Rocket and free software from RED does this now real time. What is it that your idea would do that can't be done now? Are you just saying smaller?

Smaller compact and standalone and durable.

I suppose some people might be interested in some sort of "instant dailies" device like this. But seeing that post is such a big part of getting a good image out of RAW imagery, I wouldn't think you'd want files that haven't been color corrected in some way.

Perhaps there is a market for something like this...we're happy with the free app's and Rocket for now.

ENG, Dalies, shot checking, etc. It could be used for some applications as a digital negative.

I thought about this as well. But I haven't seen the demand so far. My station is a bit bigger than a mac book but it does offline quicktimes in about half real time and verified transfer to two drives at high speed. But only very few producers are willing to pay the extra 190$ per day for it.

I was very impressed with the "marvin" demonstrated at ibc. Basic idea is to control a remote beefed up workstation with ingest + raid + RR + dedicated software via an ethernet connected laptop. It'd be great if the ingest part could be remote also but that would be more of a technical hurdle.

I also really liked the built in LTO, but have to ask if this (LTO backup, as well as to redundant HDDs) is something best done on set or back at the post house.
