  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Western Digital HD Player

Is the WD capable of 1080p24, for playback of 24p sources to displays like Pioneer Kuro?

Can one use the Popcorn as player from a network fileserver?

Thanks!

To me, the ultimate unit would be something like this WD box, but one that has like 500GBs of storage and also a network wifi connection, so you could zap files from your PC or Mac right to the unit beside your TV. That's sort of the holy grail, I think.

I believe that there may be some units like that out there already. They are called like "Media Drives" or something like that.

Roberto, the idea is that you can copy 1080p or any content from your PC onto a simple, unpowered portable USB drive, then carry it to the WD player, plug it in via USB, and watch the content on your HDTV.

A lot of 1080p rips are like 7 or 8GBs or more, so you can obviously use cheap USB keys, but they need to be NTFS, not FAT32.

Repeating video

Repeating video

Andrew,

Does the unit have a menu function to repeat or loop a particular video?
Can you mix two different clips such as 720P and 1080i on the same drive and have it play those?

Thanks,
Bob

Tom, don't they also call that a PS3... Actually, I'm pretty sure the WDTV plays more formats than PS3. I've had a couple for months now and love them.

WD's plan seems to be that we will use this device with their passport style drives and actually provide a seperate passport appropriate stand or holder for the "hard drive not included".

Bob's, question about the repeat function is a good one - I can't recall. I'll check.

yeah, exactly, but if it had onboard storage and wifi, you could cut out the middleman. this would be one step close to holy grail of a "merger." trying to outfit the TV itself or a settop box with downloading and PC functions is still a long way away, i think. all such attempts have been failures. but being able to easily zap footage to a TV drive over wifi would be a good next step, IMO.

I guess it has problem to play 1080p .mkv

Wow... then what a price.

I am really liking the consumer HD prices... they are starting to get very affordable. Feels like a tipping point once TVs drop a little bit more.

Where did you hear this?

Looks its just probably one users problems with combination of certain firmware and 1080p .mkv.

Played back the red reel on the office plasma via the WDTV, looked sick.

But couldn't get any audio, said it was unsupported....anyone have that issue?

I got mine today, but have run into some snags. An h264 file had all kinds pixillation. (Looking around online, it looks like the problem could be that the WD TV doesn't like 23.98 files, and that there's a firmware update that addresses this.) But as I was poking around in the WD TV's menus, I accidentally selected 25Hz, or some similar setting that my HDTV can't handle. So the TV just shows a message that says, "Non Compatible Format," or words to that effect. And I can't switch the WD TV back to the original setting, because the TV can't show me the menus any more!

There's one of those tiny recessed reset buttons on the unit, and I've tried pushing it in for several seconds, but it's had no effect. Maybe it doesn't reset this one parameter. I'm through fiddling with it for tonight, but maybe I can try it on a different TV tomorrow, and call their tech support.

try connecting to HDTV using the HDMI ? set HDTV (HDMI) to movie mode ...
or
try connecting it to a computer monitor thru HDMI or DVI or many gateways monitors have all the TV type connections....

Did you take the file and make an .mp4??

You just load the h.264 in quicktime and then export to .mp4 using
- Pass through - the audio needs to be re-digitized using AAC....

Look at my post above - any h.264 file has to be wrapped with .mp4
Just load the h.264 file and Export as .mp4 using Pass through

I just bought this WD media TV unit and tried to play the RED REEL from NAB 09 and I keep getting the "unsupported audio" error message and can't hear any audio. I checked the the .mov and it says 24 bit PCM Little endian audio...has anyone else had problems playing back the RED REEL? What is the problem? Thanks

Jean
