  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Welcome to the New Guy!

We all know what it is like to be new at this (we all were at some point)... and the intimidation one can feel stepping in with those more experienced than we are. I still get that feeling when I hang around some of the legends in the industry. It amazes me every day what I don't know. You want to learn but you don't want to look dumb or be embarrassed.

I'll echo Joseph's sentiment. Let's do our best to embrace the "new guy". I have seen and been inspired by top dogs willing to share their knowledge to those who are anxious to learn and less experienced. We could certainly use those guys as our examples. David Mullen quickly comes to mind. He is patient and overly generous with his time and expertise here on REDuser. When in doubt how to respond to a "newbie"... start with remembering your 1st contact when starting down this road and how you wanted to be treated.

Easy to understand, sometimes difficult to remember.

Jim

Jim, if the forum had a Facebook style 'Like' button for post, i think it would be really useful. This is the sort of post that i would like to 'Like' as it doesn't really warrant or require a response. I would help cut out all the chaff too :)

If the forum had a "Facebook style 'Like' button for posts", Jim would have a couple bajillion "likes" on every post except for the couple or so that speak of price change... :biggrinjester:

And speaking of Facebook, it's crazy that over 150 REDusers have connected with me (or vice versa) on the social network and it's interesting to me how many people from all over the world will send me messages with 20 or so questions about random RED related facts. I sometimes wonder how I have retained all of the facts to be able to answer some of that stuff... :)

These forums have really changed my life. Lurking originally on DVXUser, and then taking the plunge years later on ScarletUser/RedUser, I have been able to learn so much and meet so many people. From the newest newbie all the way to David Mullen and Bryan Singer, we all have something to learn and to contribute.

I feel very fortunate to be close to Joseph, Zac, Kyle Presely, and all my buds at ScarletUser. This is truly a place where someone can start from nothing and make their way.

Great post, Joseph. :}

Thanks, Joseph. You are the consummate host and diplomat. I'm envious in that regard.

I don't know if it's true, but I think I noticed a LOT of recent activity in the "Real Names" thread. So "welcome back" to all the "Prodigal Sons" and daughters.

And regarding the gender issue, it's pretty glaring on this forum - even compared to the photography forums I occasionally visit. My sister-in-law told me 20 years ago that she wanted to break the glass ceiling in the cinematographer profession. She didn't make it, at least not yet. Not to be sexist, but lighter ultra-powerful cameras like Epic and Scarlet may help. As the father of three daughters (all over 21 now and capable of holding their own in their professions with any male) I've learned to respect the different perspective females bring to the table.

The RED Revolution may have even more democratizing effects than imagined.

I've been following the forums for the past few years and have been hesitant to jump in, feeling I would have little to add to any informational threads. I've learned a lot from you guys and I appreciate your willingness to share. The fact that Jim is on here so often (and really even at all) blows me away. This company is quite inspiring and these forums have been extremely helpful. So, I feel I must jump in, in hopes that I might at least be a member of this community.

Again, thanks.

What he said... Thank you

I second that.

And I'll third it.
There are plenty of us (like myself) that have lurked on this site for years.
I definitely owe a thanks to the many many members here that have taught me a lot without ever realizing they did it.

+1 here too.

I have been around a while. Even before registering on the forum. Was super enthusiastic about RED way before it made its way to Finland. And am eagerly waiting for the new line-up and hoping I can become an owner rather than "just" a renter one of these pretty days.

Then again I have always felt that this forum has never been hostile. Ok maybe some witty comebacks or such but not the regular "GO AWAY" attitude you get from most internet forums if you are mistaken to ask something or state your opinion.

I would like to say the same. Thanks guys. And thank you Mr. Jannard.

We were all the new guy/girl once, but you quickly go from newb to family member.

The Red community is the best in the world. I've connected with users around the planet and the common denominator is a generous spirit and a drive to do something great. Probably stems from Jim's pioneering nature and the fact we all had to show some faith to get on board. That faith has paid off in a major way.

This forum has been a lifeline to everything and everyone good in the world of Red.

My life changed the day my R1 arrived over 2 years ago and it just keeps getting better!

my goodness i am really noticing how many new ppl there are to the forum with the cameras getting so close.

Welcome! to the best forum IN THE WORLD! haha
