  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Welcome Kyle to the RED ASYLUM...

Funny, how people worldwide react to the picture trying to pass through the metaphor.
Looks like some just looks on the picture and don’t read the text under the picture.
My initial impression of the picture was kick ass, things gets moving, collector’s item.
I like Hummer/military look of hardware, implies durability, muscularity, reliability.
And Yes, RED is though hardware, kick ass.
As to the flower picture impression: destruction of environment, pollution, climate change..... just kidding.....
Well, I was never exposed to the military conflict in my life in spite that my deep roots are in Europe, well that is why I changed the continent.

I too am all for metaphors and fun and for giving the big (and sometimes arrogant) guys a hard time -- but I think it was Jim himself who said viva la competition -- and rightly so. Yes, humble them with a better product (I'll take the metaphor as "explode Sony's ego.")

But I have to admit I am personally saddened to note the metaphors of enforcement through war/violence are far more commonplace in our culture (and seem to be more relevant to many) than the metaphors of nurturing the delicate blossoms of life without which none of us would be alive or eating or using Red cameras -- all lip service to the contrary. And after experiencing war/ violence, I think it's difficult to find the metaphorical "fun" in it for many of us, so perhaps that's why some offense might be taken. I personally like the red roses "offering" -- and the implications of that metaphor, and its connection to transforming light and "making obsolescence obsolete." (Flowers will never, I pray, become obsolete or fail to delight.)

But let Red (and its bloodless revolution) bloom! (And of course whatever metaphors they choose to do it with.)

Uh, just a technical point, but those are red tulips, not roses.........

I agree with you that the lighter side of life is always nicer to contemplate but it is a historical truth that there has always been strife. Lower level stress up to and including war, there has always been competition and strife.

Albert Einstein himself said that "So long as there are men there will be wars."

I believe that what he meant was that that he understood that there will always be competition and that that cometition sometimes show itself in ugly ways.

I say, bring on the competition!

The beauty of capitolism, with all of its downsides, is that it brings on competition in the form of invention and this means that we see gains in the advances of art, technology and many other areas that are always stifled when innovation is controlled by the authorities. (see Copernicus, Plato, Socrates, Kepler etc)

Go RED Team! and keep those "tools" close by!

I think the moral of this story is that you cant please everyone all the time.

Jarred, the moral to this story is that you DON'T need to please everybody all the time. We're here to talk all things RED, not to question how people like to have their photos taken. No wonder this world is so troubled...for those wanting to be pleased all the time, the brothels south of the border in Tijuana are a good place to start...

my 0.01cents: I get this 'cool' image...just would not post it for
my company......people take things the wrong way all the time.

This is a public board.. Everyone reads it.

The world could do without weapons of all types IMHO anyway...

Getting rid of "weapons of all types" should be quite a challenge: As I recall, Cain killed Able with a rock. So I guess you could say the human race got off to a bit of a rocky start.

Anyway, there have been wars and killing as long as there have been people, I would suggest we not start another war here.

Often, humor is based on being shocking anyway. I for one, look forward to doing helpful, worthwhile things with my Reds when they come. Meanwhile I enjoy seeing the people at Red showing a healthy balance of work and play. Let's just laugh along with them. Their job is tough enough already.

It's about fucking time!

Thank you Red for being un-PC (seriously), I get sick and tired of the corporate paranoia HR run amok. It's very, very refreshing to see you guys doing cool stuff and not really caring if some touchy types get upset.

Our insane culture has elevated giving offense to someone to be the highest of sins. If offended, no longer do people take personal responsibility (i.e. turn off the tv, look away from the magazine stand or...surf away from the freakin web site) and instead they rail against the source for offending them. Who cares if you offend some people? Too many so-called adults need to grow up and cope. I see, read or hear things on a daily basis that I disagree with, sometimes heavily, but the mature thing is to simply acknowledge to yourself you disagree with whatever it is and then move on and let it roll off. Water off a duck's back...

Is this whole thread a Monty Python sketch?

Guns are just tools, like rocks, hammers, and Cadillacs. All of which have been used to kill people intentionally. And save them too.

I agree with Shawn; let's not be too sensitive. Life is full of happiness and tragedy; that's just the way it is. The only way to offend nobody is to lock yourself in a box and say and do nothing. Which, by the way, is offensive to me!

Incidentally, a gun in the right hands saved my life and my neighbor's from five drunk 20-year-olds with baseball bats, and no shots were fired. We stayed alive, and the drunk kids did not become murderers. The best outcome possible. Even so, my favorite weapon personally is my smile, as it has disarmed more potential threats and gotten me out of more tight spots than anything. Works 99% of the time.

I'm sure nobody on this forum means harm to anyone else. Let's make this assumption and lighten up.

P.S. For us Americans on the forum, we DON'T have the right not to be offended! Finner's avatar offends me everyday, and I'm still alive!

P.P.S. Oh yeah, welcome Kyle! Nice sneer!

Oh boo F****ng hoo!

Are you guys seriously searching for a metaphor within this photo?

Drawing conclusions?

If so, YOU HAVE TOO F****NG MUCH SPARE TIME ON YOUR HANDS.

GO BE PC SOMEWHERE ELSE HIPPIES! :bleh:

Cool picture, btw.....I like the hard edge light.

Anybody got any gasoline? The flames are dyin' doun...

Is this whole thread a Monty Python sketch?

I just watched the docu "The Life of Python" actually several short documentaries about Monty Python's Flying Circus

All of this dissusion about military and guns is about the same type of knee jerk response about a fictional character that was born too close to the Christ in the "Life of Brian" movie making a statement about mistaken identity - but all of the people who didn't see the film protested. Imposed a belief system on symbols. Our ability to see humor in sensitive topics reveals a lot about ourselves.

A long time ago, I shot documentary footage of a shoot done by well known still photographer, James Balog. For his book "Anima" nudes with chimps no less. And being in the studio there was really nothing erotic going on. Just a comparison with our closest DNA relative. But you knew whoever looked at those images would imprint their own feelings upon the subject. And I realized in that moment that a photo only brings out feelings in the viewer. Often feelings that were not present by the author. The power of film or photography in general is what it stirs up in your subconscious. You could photgraph a wide variety of subjects with no agenda and you would have other's agendas imprinted all over it.
