  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weird banding on my Epic-W

From a quality perspective it looks to be getting getting pretty close, but they also released a stable firmware update on Friday (https://www.red.com/downloads/56d874d3f01b302cf500085a) so it would be quite the fast turnaround to do two in 1 week, I can't remember when RED ever did that.

So when you debayer in DaVinci using settings mentioned - there is no banding or color issues?
That seems to contradict some of the non-proRes posts.
Thanks

I still see some weird transitions even at full debayer. I really hope this gets fixed otherwise my helium weapon upgrade was a total waste.

So just to be clear--any updates from RED won't let us retroactively (easily) fix footage that has been shot? How much heavy lifting needs to be done in Resolve to grade these problems out of R3Ds?

From what I've found you can take out color casts in Resolve pretty easily with a saturation vs saturation curve by pulling out the saturation from the least saturated parts of the image (the point on the curve all the way to the left). What I'm worried about is the strange transitions between mid gray to highlights. Every now and again I see harsh transitions from one to the other like a bad old school video blowout and that's at full debayer, log 10, REd wide gamut rgb and my Gioscope and histogram never showed that I was clipping.

Depends on the shot. Anywhere from not much work to nearly impossible. It all depends on what areas of the image it's a problem in. If it's in the skin, a skin qualifier can usually clean it up decently. If it's happening on a plain white wall, it's damn near impossible to remove, because it's hard to qualify that area exactly.

Some scenes the problem isn't even apparent. So it's really hit or miss when it may/may not affect you.

Here's a still from Retribution where the banding didn't crop up the entire shoot. The camera was rated for ISO 2000 so the banding was above the typical exposure area of skin.

Here's another still during a sunset where the green band can be seen polluting the image between the mountain and the sun.

And again, a video in motion of the artifact:

Nope. It's still there. Many were looking at lesser quality debayers and seeing an improvement in color gradation when they went to full debayer. From my point of view, it's bad enough at full debayer, and worse at lesser qualities, feel me?

I assumed more pixels would smooth the transition between ranges of luminance not the other way around. My Red dragon was not great at high iso's but it never did this. I do think the Helium chip is much more sensitive to color and definitely has more accurate skin tones and color in general. The problem is it's sensitive to all color, especially green so it makes color charting and white balance more important than ever. I mean I'm getting green casts in daylight lit rooms. Im really hoping this next firmware update addresses all of this.

Hi folks,
I would be very interested if the problem still exists?

I'm interested in when a fix for this will come as well.
I'm having issues like the banding etc and have
a major shoot coming.
