I've been reading a lot of posts here regarding a Scratch lite version, which will help many of us who cannot afford to buy a full version of Scratch at this moment. But while looking for solutions for another project (BD authoring to be precise), and almost despairing at the cost for those softwares (Sonic Scenarist BDMV costs around $50000) I found there's a company, NetBlender, which gives you the option to buy a license for just one month if you want, going month to month with no contract; and actually according to an article in creative cow, the two top BD authoring softs are Sony BluPrint, and NetBlender's.
So I thought, wouldn't it be great, to have the option to buy a Scratch license that runs per week, or month, just for ongoing projects, instead of having to put that much dough for something that could turn out to be a one-time gig?

The concept makes sense for certain situations. You rent camera's, lighting equipment, actors. So why not the software.

If you just plan on doing a conform on Scratch - it might make sense. But if you want to do full grading and finishing the software is just a piece of the puzzle. You need a high-end workstation and Quadro card, well calibrated monitors. Preferably waveform monitoring, and a room with controlled lighting.

And most of all, you'd need an experienced colorist to make the system "work".

In most cases I think it makes more sense to make a deal with a posthouse.

Which Monitor

Which Monitor

Hi,
Which monitor is recommended for Scratch for grading?

well, the concept can be applied anywhere, I work as a freelance colorist, some projects I get to rent a professional suite like a Pablo or DaVinci, others I can do at my studio with Color (I don't charge for rendering time) I had to turn down some RED projects because I don't have a Scratch, I do have the computer to run it, a HP xw8600 with a Quadro FX4600 that I use for other things, but I'm not going to pay that money for a couple of projects, I mean, for all I know, by April Apple could really surprise us all with major upgrades in Color (like background rendering, realtime playback of rendered files, native R3D) I mean, with this economy, and how fast something so good today can become obsolete tomorrow (Final Touch costed $25K before becoming Color) I'd love to rent the license, if I get enough work with it that justifies buying it, I'll do it.

As there are independant filmakers, there are also a new breed of emerging (thanks to Apple mostly) independent talent that used to work for post houses, that are starting to run business for themselves, without the huge overhead of a post house, using those for hard drive to tape export and QC reports mostly, basically you'll be able to use the same talent in a cheaper environment.

Have you emailed anyone at Assimilate regarding this? Asking here is not going to get you an answer. Asking them might get you a surprising one.

No, I haven't really, this was just an idea that I thought it was out of my hands to be honest, I've seen some Scratch team members make some comments here, and I thought, let's throw it out there and see what people think. At this moment I don't have a need for it, but I would love to have the option if I ever do.

Thanks for your reply!

At the risk of crossing the line into shameless self promotion on a tech forum I happen to offer a solution that might suit you. I have a Scratch system complete with eCinema monitor in a Sprinter van that can be brought to any location and rented by the day/week. The interior of the van is set up as a color grading suite with dark grey everywhere and has two seats. If you need more people space, the main hardware rides on a wheeled rack and the whole system can be rolled into your facility and hooked up in less than 10 minutes.

Working out a short term software license with Assimilate might be your best option, BUT - renting a complete system from me or someone else might be more efficient. Just saying.
