  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it still common practice to rent out gear as one day for week-ends?

This seems to be common with the bigger rental places up here in Canada but I wonder if this holds with the smaller DP/Rental RED owners.

Up here a RED ONE MX kit can be had for close to $1000 for the week-end from Friday noon till Monday am (which is considered a day rate).
 
I do a day rate plus a half day, pick up friday night bring back Monday night. I find this is also common with some of the local rental houses.

So from Friday to Monday you charge $500?
 
It's difficult because the same problem also happens in reverse. I needed a DSLR for a few hours on a Saturday and had to accept a weekend rate because they weren't open Sunday to take their camera back.

Ended up costing me $450 to rent a $3000 camera for a few hours! If I knew that in advance I would have rented a Scarlet from a private owner instead. Plus I was 3000 miles away from home and just needed to solve a problem quickly.

I think in general the 1 + 1/2 day rate weekend is pretty fair, especially if you are able to pick up Friday afternoon. A resourceful renter can get quite a bit of use if they schedule correctly, and someone just needing for one day won't get overly stabbed.

Unless you go on the honor system, which will never work as everyone will lie, this is probably the only way.
 
No from Friday night to Monday I do $500 day rate plus a half for the weekend so $750 from Friday night till Monday. But thats not a kit thats just the camera body (with Lens Mount, Side SSD, Side Handle, Top Plate, and Module adapter)

I know for a fact the sound rental companies in LA charge 1-day rental for equipment picked up late Thursday and returned early Monday AM. I assume that the major camera rental companies do the same thing, but much depends on the deal. 3-day week rental rates are becoming more and more common, as are package deals.
 
When I rent gear, I treat my rentals like rentals houses treat me in LA. Weekend is 1 day rate, Pickup AFTER 5 on Friday and Return by 10 AM monday.

If they can get use out of the gear Friday night and Monday morning, more power to them =)
