Hi guys,

I'm new to the red universe and kind of stuck in research...

The thing is that I'm in the decission process of either getting a Weapon MG or a Weapon CF.
Since there is quite some gap between those two when it comes to finances I'm almost one hundret percent positive the MG version is the way to go for me.
I don't see the need to shoot in 8K anywhere in the near future so I'm good with 6K. The only thing that bugs me is that you can only shoot ProRes up to 2K.
Now this is where my question comes in:

Is it possible to record 4K ProRes externally with the Shogun Inferno?
I don't think that I'm going to need it a lot but it would be a nice thing to have.

I've been googling and searching and everything but haven't found anything...maybe one of you can help me.

Apart from the upgrade option...do you see anything that would speak against the MG in comparasion to the CF?

Thank you

Marco

Unfortunately, the video outputs on RED cameras (all of them) are limited to 1080p. So you can not get a 4K video feed out to record to the Inferno.

woah that was fast.

Alright so that answers my question. Didn't really think that it was possible to be honest.

Thank you Matt!

Matt, what you are saying makes perfect sense, but I'm reading the Atomos (Ninja Flame in my case) is capable of recording 4k ProRez or DNX and the new firmware update of 7.01 works with RED. Are they just being evasive or is there some way to record from camera to Atomos via their HDMI input that somehow skirts this?

ADDITIONAL: Is there any cameras that export 4k to a display?

Although the camera outputs 1080p so you can't record 4k prores externally, you can record 2k prores and 6k Raw at the same time on Mg Weapon. You can edit using the proxies and then conform to 4k when you are done with post using the RAWs.

iF a client insists on you delivering 4k ProRes at the end of the job, then by being in the Mg Weapon you would already have all the accessories for a DSMC2 brain and you easily rent a CF Weapon to supplement the job.

Lots of camera's export 4K to a display. Even the cheap Sony a6300 has 4K out via HDMI. HDMI and SDI on RED cameras is limited to 1080p.

New firmware working with RED just means that record trigger on the camera will trigger record on the Atomos and there's probably now an HDR and LUT setting for RED cameras which wasn't there when they shipped (They had Sony, Arri, and Canon but no RED options upon shipping). Regardless of whether it "works" with RED, you are limited by the output of the camera, which with REDs is 1080p.. So it doesn't matter whether you have a 4K recorder or not, you're only getting 1080p from the camera.

Got it... they really should have made that clear. But at least it is now. '-)

I believe if you have the red cast module you can output 4K to an external recorder

Louis, what you say clearly makes sense and in that case sure that would be an option.
Anyway...shooting on RED one would go with RAW 9 out of 10 times anyway...if not more.
So...yeah...can't say that makes the decission any easier :D

I've got a S-W on pre-order - not sure of the 20K extra for a Weapon MG are justified or not.
Then again to REALLY make a difference and get a whole lot of more features I'd have to make the leap to Weapon CF - which comes down to an extra 50K.
I guess I'll just have to think about that a couple of days...it's not like the S-W is being shipped sometime within the next weeks after all...

Of course, but again, more cost and narrows the difference between MG and CF.
