  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We need an owners-only forum!

How about a tech newsletter that's sent out as a pdf? The RED WIRE or something. A briefing document that is built by people from posts on the main site and compiled every two weeks or so with alerts broadcast by the subscribers when a new issue arises.

I absolutely understand why the need for this suggestions....

but

If it might solve some complications it would create another.

You'd loose much more than you aim to gain.

Interesting idea, Jeff. The most important news and announcements, gear and workflow...and if you want to read the whole thread, just follow the link...

The noise generators have already successfully removed our most important information resource, Jim Jannard. That alone is reason enough to add the owners-only forum.

To determine whether this would be a solution, one would need to analyze how the picture would have been different if posting had been restricted to owners or other invitees. Based on what I have seen -- and I haven't done an analysis -- I don't think there would have been that much difference in what Jim would have ended up having to deal with on this site.

I think the issue is figuring out how to restrict intensely hostile posts uploaded in an angry rage after some unsettling news or experience. Some of the complexity in this deals with the fact that sometimes there are emotional concepts that people can perceive in conflicting ways. One example of this is the whole debate about whether or not Red had betrayed its mission statement. I don't want to debate the merits of the allegation or how it might be mistaken. The important point is that this is just about the worst accusation I could imagine being presented at Jim's doorstep -- that he had just betrayed his promises and his dream. He's a man of enormous integrity and I imagine that might well have left him speechless.

Is there a rule that could be put into place that would have toned down postings of this nature -- that would have caused the poster to present it as a question to Jim, seeking to understand a deeply unsettling occurrence, rather than as an accusation and an attack?

If the answer to that is "no", then I don't see how there's any point in discussing any further the topic of how to make this site a less hostile place for the senior executives of Red.

If the answer is "yes", then what would that rule be?

If a rule can be articulated that the general membership can agree to, then I think implementing the rule would probably be fairly straightforward.

A good point (number6). And I think the majority of people here are seeing the problem and are commenting within their level of tolerance for it.

The prospect of the completly open forum is plagued with random/repeated noise, emotional and trolling posts and a tendancy of everyone wanting the soap box regardless of the usefulness of their comment.
VS
A controlled forum where some will rage against the censorship as a threat of their right to free speech with conspiracy theories and accusations of biased information. There'd probably be an intangible stigma to a degree over whether the information presented represented the whole truth.
VS
An invitational forum where the screening of members might dissaude some from joining and certainly would be restricting the amount of useful information by simply reducing the sample of contributers.

They all have downsides. A more controlled forum is probably where thing may head and RED (IMO) has shown a strong tendency for allowing pro and con to be politely debated/suggested. But the nature of a controlled mechanism means that there would be that stigma to a less extent. Its the way it is.
Of course the disscussion of this will probably just go round and round as the committee discussing is populated by the full spectrum of opinions :)

i have a suggestion.. only who IS buying the epic now.. i mean 2008 users.. :sorcerer:

I wanted to resurrect this topic.

Especially in light of the increased amount of noise "post 11/13".

reduserpro.net ????

or some other "owners only" forum? then owners can maybe make referrals for other people to join?

Not trying to be exclusive - just trying to filter some of the noise.

Real names was the first step!

EDIT: ...and I am not suggesting the "pay" model discussed in this thread.

I don't see the point for a whole new individual message board... how about a Memebers only Sub-Forum, in which somebody at RED would have to go through and match Owners to the username (people would have to submit to obtain a check on their ownership status), and convert their username to a specific (additional) group, and this group would have access to another section of sub-forums.

Then again, I'm sure people at RED have much better things to do. But regardless how would you confirm if somebody is an Owner otherwise?

(I'd be willing to do it... I'll take payment in the form of a camera.)

The posts that annoy me most are those "amazing" "awesome" "fantastic" etc. ones, you have to click through pages of useless garbage until you find something useful. I don`t think that a paid forum is going to work, we had the same discussion at the steadicam forum some time ago.

Yes - something - anything that even filters out 10% of the noise.

Good idea.

I agree, the amount of static is getting worse.
I don't come on the boards as often because I'm busy and I really don't have time to sort the wheat from the chaff.
I've personally learned a great deal from some of post's on the forum, there's a wealth of knowledge amongst the members, but it's getting harder to find,so anything that helps will be very welcome.
Perhaps camera owners and invited guest's is reasonable way to start, but it will attract a lot of criticism.
Tom.

Sound Devices has something like this. You register the serial # of your recorder and it then unlocks the registered user forum. And it is a very productive forum where users share first hand information and real world experience about their SD gear.

So a general forum for everyone, and a registered owner section that gets unlocked when you own a product.

i put one of these together already...called it NoiseFilter. The idea was to bring the news to local users in my area, but if you would like your name added to the mailing list, send me a pm.

it's kind of interesting, i spent about 2 weeks collecting what i believed to be the salient posts and ended up with about 12 threads...12 very good threads, i would say...but that's a pretty high s/n ratio...

Speaking from my own experience with private membership forums... We won't cut down on the noise ratio. Won't happen. It does when the membership is very small, but with somewhere around 5000 cameras in the wild and soon a lot more, it makes no sense. The signal to noise ratio isn't going to be any different once we get a few hundred people behind the closed doors. And then what happens to those who have legitimate need to be there -- like the guy who just signed a long-term rental agreement for a RED camera? And when his rental period is up, do we kick him out of the club? Or give him a few more months of charity membership in case he has post issues or decides to buy a camera of his own?

My proposal for a noise-free information source would be a moderated community wiki of some sort.
