  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We need an owners-only forum!

I think real names + a vote off the forum function could get the results you guys want. 20 votes by 20 individuals and your account is blocked.

But let us not be fooled by the reason the noise is so high. Yes there are complaints but the base of complaining is because you care...

I remember the last NAB was like this but it settles down a week after NAB.

RED did the right choice, too bad JIM had to go to remain sane.

Slashdot.org has a way to score posts in such a clever way. It helps inform readers as to whats insightful, funny, smart, informative... in a 1-5 scoring system. And it works quite well. I wouldn't mind that.

If they get the Scarlet user forum up soon, that will probably help allot too, as much of the trouble seems to be coming from that.

I like that!

Woops sorry Mr. White, I think I accidentally edited your post instead of replying.. Common newbie mod mistake not to worry!

This was my reply:

I agree. But a scoring system does not censor. It just puts a number next to each post. (Score 5: Funny) etc

No worries. Your edit became funny. ;-)

I don't see it as a "censor" system either.
If you write a good post, you get a tumbs up (1 point per user who thinks your post is good and rates it) and the opposite if you write bad things. If you get minus X points... Your account is blocked. Good users will end up with high ratings.... Bad users end up blocked!

Do we really want a private space?

With a rating system, you can write what ever you want, but if the majority of people think that what you wrote is bad/wrong or just incorrect... Your points will suffer. You can always rebuild them if you have something valuable to contribute.

It smells to censorship. Maybe to a north european this may seem normal. If you will ask to another one from another region of the world, you could have another opinion, I think.

Well, all the top community driven sites (American might i add) employ this policy.. Europe has nothing to do with it.

the s/n ratio has gotten way too high...i don't think discussion of "censorship" is useful. this is about not being able to cull out basic info about the camera and workflow without wasting hours of time doing it.

sportsshooter is a professional forum for professionals where you have to meet certain criteria to join (in this case, ownership should do...), and you can be invited by another member to join. so really, all you would have to do is know someone who owns a camera or even cold e-mail an owner and make a case for admission. i don't think that is such a big deal. it could still be a very open community but designed to stay on the task of discussing the camera and filtering noise. read only for everyone else.

We need fast resource; when you search now you get a lot of off topic info!

Change of Heart

Change of Heart

Originally, I laughed at the idea of a pro red user, but after thinking about it for a day or two, and noticing Jim's leave of absence from the boards, I think I've had a change of heart.

This forum has been amazing, we've got amazing DP's answering all of our questions, RED employees responding to us directly, users posting footage, lens tests, building their own accessories for RED etc.

We have to preserve this amazing environment at all costs. I think one way to do that is to say "this has real value", and put a dollar amount on it. I don't think it should cost very much, but that extra step of being charged a small monthly fee on your credit card would help deter people from coming in and ruining the board at no cost to themselves. In the end, if keeping it free makes this forum useless, nobody wins.

Of course I think all RED employees, Evin, Brook, the moderators, David Mullen etc etc. and any other members that bring high value to the community should be subsidized by the rest of us. (maybe RED owners get a free login with their cameras?)

I'd be so bummed out to lose this thing!

On the off chance that any REDfolk are reading, I had a shoot this weekend with RED and it was the best shoot of my career, everyone was been floored. Don't forget how many of us are truly thankful to you guys!

p.s. Anyone who wants to start a vigilante justice group and hunt down the people who are screwing up our forum, I'm all in ;)

Thanks!

instead of a fee, what about inviation only....you need two invitations from different users to get access.....if you dont have an invitation you have 25 free posts....

pro:
no fee, sound/noise ratio gets down
you dont have to own a cam
you dont have to have xxx numbers of posts

con:
chime in
