  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Way to really speed up CS6!

It was great to see Steve Forde (After Effects product manager) demonstrate and discuss this with Steve Wozniak at the keynote presentation at NAB.

OCZ Revo drives look like the same thing and have been out for a couple of years now. Pretty expensive, but for the bandwidth, not too bad. Takes a little tinkering as I understand it, to make it bootable.

And it only uses a single lane PCIe slot.

EDIT: I stand corrected. The picture looks like a single lane slot connection but the specs refer to an x4 lane interface.

Todd, is the Revo drive also supported?

As great as the tools are right now, I still feel we're a few years behind in some areas. I recognize the challenges with high resolution imagery and I don't doubt the enormous effort put into striving for faster processes, but months to render one shot to me means the industry could really use a game changer. One of the frustrations I've always had with After Effects is how long certain tasks take, even in HD res. I'm very much a "think it-do it" kind of person and I am looking forward to the day when we'll be pushing this stuff around without all the bottlenecks in place. Hopefully that's what we're starting to see happen.

I agree Steve. From reading some of the claims about this type of solution, it sounds like we may be getting away from the need for excessive cores and threads and being able to make the computers we have faster (while using Adobe, anyway) just by moving from SATA connectors to PCIe connections. I already am thinking I can get one of the REVO cards (less expensive than the Fusion-io but not quite as fast, perhaps) and bump up my CS6 work and when done, save it to a SATA HDD. I was thinking I needed to build a new computer with Dragon coming, but now I'm thinking, maybe not. Two of these in a RAID 0 could make your headspin!

If Hugo was posted using either ArriRAW and/or DPX, I can understand the render times and the need for incredibly fast storage. However, shooting on Red with RAW at around 50MB/s, double that for 3D, staying with the R3Ds as long as possible, working with EXRs, storage throughput won't necessarily be the issue. Perhaps Red have unwittingly keyed neatly into the future buy placing all the pressure on CPU/GPU/Rocket and taking some pressure off I/O.

I had a nightmare run at NAB with Adobe. Great booth.. but man.. Some of the demo guys out the back were scaring me. When you get them scratching there heads over simple tasks, you do get a but worried.

I tried and tried... but really it was hard work to find a demo guy that actually new how to show many anything I asked about... All the basic stuff fine, but anything RED or R3D related / speed related, card related... laptop related R3D workflow... forget it.
I had to piece together so many bits of information from so many different people, its was becoming a joke after a while.

ANNNNNNNYWAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY.... NAB is done for another year.

So if somebody could point me to a reliable sorce of information regarding ADOBE PR, AE, SG (advanced) online training... and RED focused.. so I can fill in the holes that would be great.

Thanks for the info above Les.

That's all too common these days. Tech guys can answer the basic questions but the important questions for us to decide on purchasing/workflow/etc are really detailed and often take user end research.

What type of questions were you looking to have answered? Perhaps your initial loss could be our collective gain?

Patrick, I am in no way recommending the hybrid one in this link, but it is rather intriguing. Still, it requires PCIe x4 slot instead of SATA. And 1 TB is a real plus.
Well I was going to go with a eSata ssd ... but from the recommendations I'm seeing ... looks like i should go pci, so I will be checking out all these ssd/disk/ram things. When I am doing a scene (1/36 of a movie) ... i'm normally running a bit under a terrabyte of DI files ... so these new adobe caches are a bit like DI files (as i'm starting to "skip" the DI step more) ... so i need atleast 512 gig of SSD. Perfect world on a hybrid setup ... I'd like some sata3 (or pci) 512 gig ssd and a 12 terabyte raid ... munched together for com positing. btw in the nab 2012 thread they are talking about render time for special effects, I'm not sure what they were doing but with cloud rendering that is the least of my problems - my main "slow down" is in compositing vfx/sfx/raw.

Did they give a date on when CS6 is coming and if premier pro is part of the upgrading software?
Hi Will,

There's no firm date on the CS6 release yet - hopefully we'll all know soon :)

Not sure what you mean by your second question. Premiere Pro is part of the Production Suite so if your upgrading to that or Master Collection (which includes all Adobe tools), then Premiere Pro CS6 is included :)

I'm curious about your bad experience at the Adobe booth. I don't recall you coming by the "Ask the Expert" station when I was there (every day until1:30PM).

What specific questions were you asking?

The announcement will be made next Monday as far as pricing and release dates!

Hi Todd,

My experience was the same as Will's.

BTW I attempted to send you a PM, but that appears to be disabled.

Overall I'm very impressed with Adobe's work over the last year. It's a huge step forward in supporting RED workflow from the CS4 and CS5.0 days.

Further many other pain points appear to be addressed in 6.0 (e.g. meta data entry issues resolved by Prelude)

That said it was up to me to dig around and find these answers.

The best example was trying to run down why performance in 5.5 is so solid in the gui, but falls apart when outputting via either AJA or BMD output cards.

After discovering the few little kiosks tucked behind the main area I met with a guy at the Premier station. He was very polite but wasn't able to help at all, with me covering things like "BTW yes the cache and project and data locations are on the fast raid, not the boot drive" etc.

We had a conversation that lasted several minutes, and at no point did he mention that the IO infrastructure was rewritten in CS 6 to address performance issues and to remove the requirement for card specific project presets. I found that information out at the AJA booth.

I guess I missed the expert booth was it further around back?

Keep up the good work, everything I see is directionally correct. Enough that I'm in process on transition some workstations from FCP 7 to Premier.

Steve

I find that output via Matrox I/O box works just fine....ALBEIT it's 8bit not 10bit....Thats up to adobe to give a 10bit signal out to the I/O box BM or Matrox or whatever....but in CS 5.5 it was still 8 bit. THAT took some digging as well.....i'm really looking or hoping this is now 10 bit with CS 6....everything is gravy with how the suite works, but if i can't monitor and edit/color in 10bit....then not much point--or rather the engine to pull the train needs some turbos.....PLEASE 10bit!!! since on it....also want to be able to drop an entire REEL on the timeline---THEN export (after edit/coloring of each clip---and output as INDIVIDUAL clips....not one long timeline.....another feature that is lacking in CS 6 that kicks me in the gonads when i need to export individual clips for a job....PLEASE x 2 Adobe, i've sent my requests...but i know these two are rather the red-headed step child requests...they get little attention....
