If theatres want to put more butts in seats they should be lowering their prices, offering dinners, selling booze, and/or using any other tricks to make it a value-added experience. On the studio side, realistically, the only thing they can do is make better movies... (which is less likely than offering booze and cheaper tickets, and is easier said than done.)
Having done a reasonable amount of work researching the viability of an independent theater operation, I can honestly say that there is no financial way to make that work. Theaters are the way they are in part because they have to be. The economics of operating the building, maintaining the projection equipment, handling ticket sales, keeping the theater clean and sanitary, manning the concessions, advertising, and permits required do not work without the larger pictures to attract moviegoers, and they certainly do not work when you start giving things away. Combining a restaurant with a theater operation sounds good, but it really only works if each business can operate independently and be self sustaining, benefiting from the combination but not dependent on it.
