  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Warning Autoformat erased my Footage!

The one advantage with the auto format is that it is possible, when you've cleared a CF card and copied it off, to simply delete the Magazine profile files and have the camera format the card without the 'card not empty' warning when it get cycled back to camera (which can be slightly alarming for the AC if they're not into the flow yet.

That said, I suppose deleting all the files from the card when you're done copying would achieve the same purpose?

Basically what I'm getting at is that it is good to have a clear way that the DIT can prep the card once they're copied so that they can be reused without doubt in the camera, that way if a step is missed a the 'Card not empty' message does flash up it can actually be caught.

If, when this bug is fixed, RED could define a way that we on the data managing side can set the card up to signify to the camera that it is, without a doubt, a good-to-go clear and copied card. That would be excellent.

The option that would make me happiest on this issue, in order of preference would be:

1) Look for a file called 'duplicated' or similar that the DIT could easily create (by hand or with management tools)
2) Look for an entry in the Magazine file that specifies the copy has been made (I believe Offhollywood suggested something like this). Optionally that it's been copied a certain number of times, higher than a configurable number in the camera (ie. it will warn unless Magazine says that two or more copies have been made).
3) Define empty as no non-system files (so ignore the dot-files that Macs create). Warning if there are any regular files or directories present.
4) Define empty as formatted FAT32 or totally blank (no files or directories at all).

2) Look for an entry in the Magazine file that specifies the copy has been made (I believe Offhollywood suggested something like this). Optionally that it's been copied a certain number of times, higher than a configurable number in the camera (ie. it will warn unless Magazine says that two or more copies have been made).

This is the only viable option. I loved offhollywood's 'card has been copied' metadata suggestion. I hope Red is considering it. Allowing a setting in the camera where it will only format cards that have X number of backups is a perfect solution.

The camera should make it difficult to format cards where it doesn't recognize the filesystem because that is an indication that the card is either corrupted or contains non-Red data.

In the interest of data protection (and consequently the reputation of Red with producers and money people) Red should be making media harder to erase. Not easier.

I am still in shock that Jarred agreed with me on something. Does this mean that my "bannination counter" has been rolled back a notch?
