  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Want to open a (RED) digital cinema movie theatre...

Yeah French Bureaucracy...they adore paper work and stamps. Thanks Mikael for the composite, I am presenting it this week.

You might need licenses from the collecting societies. Speak to SACD first off. For music public performance on the publishing side it's SACEM. For the recording side, usually that's been bought out, all media in perp. Any mechanical copying such as ingesting to hard disk, you may be able to argue it's ephemeral, otherwise it's SDRM. Ultimately though, it can be a complicated business, so you're probably better of just dealing with mandatory local permits if you'll definitely be on the radar, and then licensing other rights retrospectively if/when challenged.

I was involved with a 50 seat coffee house cinema a while back. The basic legal procedure for charging admission was to book through a normal film distributor, pay a commercial rental fee based on number of seats, and buy the DVD. Rental fee typically covered a 5 day run, any number of showings.

In the UK there are a few loopholes that can be exploited to publically screen films - the usual one is to have a 'Film Club' - a private none-profit film club which (and I dont know that particulars) in some way becomes exempt from a few different copyright/censorship laws. You have to have a membership list, however, and there are a few other things that are involved, but maybe something like that could be investigated?
