Baselight with Blackboard is very expensive premiere grading platform. Unlike Resolve, buying it requires a business plan or very deep pockets. I highly doubt, that you'll find a fire sale on such system. FilmLight is known to buy Baselight systems back from stressed sellers as a way to keep prices of Baselight pretty steady. You may need to contact FilmLight directly to see, if they have a refurbished system available.

Jake, note that Baselight has adjusted their prices quite a bit in the last two years from where they used to be. I think the days of $500,000 color-corrections systems are gone. Even Quantel Pablo has dropped substantially.

In response to the market changes they had dropped their prices a great deal and these days for $100k you can get a pretty powerful system. Said that, they still pretty expensive, especially the service contracts. But that's he price for innovation, flexibility and elegance many still willing to pay.

Harcharan,

You have been ignoring ALL of my emails for the last 4+ months. I sold you an ALURA and used my FedEX account to pay for your shipping fees that you promised to reimburse me with. $328.00 US. I didn't want to have to post on Reduser everywhere and I warned you I would if you didn't pay me back for this, but with my exhausted efforts to request for my $, you have failed to perform and communicate with me.

Yep, all very true.

I noticed that Sony Colorworks just opened up an all-4K TV post house, in addition to their feature/DI post house on the lot out there in Culver City: all using Baselight, using all Sony monitors and projectors. Lots and lots and lots of Baselights there. I think Filmlight has been very responsive to the competition from other systems out there, but no question, it's not as cheap as a $50,000 full-blown Resolve. It'd be interesting to put both side by side and try to do identical tasks on each system and see how they compare in terms of features and speed. I really like the new Baselight control surface, but I don't know of anybody who's got one yet.

They are hard at work re-mastering everything in 4K, including Breaking Bad!
I believe they have at least 12 Baselights there, may be more. I believe they are the largest installation of Baselights in the country. Warner Brothers have quite a few as well, but nowhere near as many as Colorworks. I don't think, that comparing Resolve and Baselight would be fair. They are in two different leagues. The same goes for the panels. Having used both, to me, Baselight is a Ferrari, lovingly assembled by the master craftsmen, while Resolve is a do-it-yourself kit car.

Stefan Sonnenfeld at Company 3 (a longtime Resolve user) would disagree with you. I think it's possible to get anything to work if you throw enough people, money, and equipment at it. But to me, the hidden cost is really in the infrastructure and pipeline, which is the really, really expensive part on which you can't skimp.

Or if you happen to have Stef's talent.

Stefan's working style is partially based around a number of things that have always been a bit unique to DaVinci products, and his familiarity and comfort with the feel of DaVinci's controls allow him to do what he does so well and so efficiently. That makes it great for him and those who share his working style. For others, other tools speak to them a bit more directly. Toolsets for colorists are often very personal things, even to those of us who have been proficient on multiple systems.

Blackmagic is a hardware company. Resolve software is a byproduct, with a is sole reason to existence is to help drive sales of the BM hardware. That's why now it is offered for free. New Resolve features introduced, but magically they're only available to BM hardware/panel users and I'm afraid, as the time goes by, it will only get worse. Resolve is a competent grading platform. Yes, there are certain improvements, that were introduced by BM since DaVinci times, such as better conforming tools, editing and new interface. But as far as grading tools they are pretty much the same as it ever was. To me color grading is art. As I'm grading I need creative tools immediately without waiting for other departments to perform them for me. This may work great for CO3, but this will not work for majority of users.
Right now I'm using Baselight Editions for FCP and Avid with Avid MC Color panel. I also use the same panel with Resolve. Well, the difference is striking! Resolve forces you to jump through countless hoops just to get to the right menu in addition to never ending mouse click-athon. With Baselight plugin it is a beautiful grading experience. With Baselight all of the controls are at your finger tips. I'm comparing a plugin with a full blown grading system and plugin wins hands down!!! I just don't see such sophistication, elegance and flexibility in Resolve. There is just no comparison...
