  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Waichowski's doing matrix 4 & 5?

I probably sound like such a hypocrite saying this on a camera company forum, but; I really wish more film makers would stop getting excited about new technology and start getting their homework done on a the script. Great cameras like REDs are brilliant and they only come about through huge amounts of work but it just seems a shame to use them on under developed ideas.
I hope Matrix 4+5 are about more than 3D or iMax, I hope they are about stories that cinema needs to tell.

Well... Screenwriters focus on scripts. DPs focus on lighting and cameras. DITs focus on technology and cameras. Etc.

I think this loose term of being a "filmmaker" kinda blurs things, specially in the low end of things. However, you're right, there is much to study regarding screenwriting, I've read my share, Robert Mckee, Lajos Egri... The study and practice is eternal though, however screenwriting is not my main area of focus, thank god, it's a tough area.

Justin, have you seen the video where Kevin Smith talks about his story writing the Superman script? You'll get why so many shitty movies get produced. :biggrin5:

Reading the first writer/s draft of the Godzilla remake compared to the shooting script is a real eye opener to the studio process.

Without a doubt original scriptwriting is the hardest part of making films. Period.

That's a good point but I think a lot of Directors are given or take control of so many areas of the process, from camera choice to rewrites, that its fair to term them as film makers. But we agree that good screenwriting really is something rare and special.

Haven't seen the Kevin Smith clip; do you have a link? Thanks for the recommendation.

Yeah I put that up but i don't think people really care lol everyone likes to talk about their feelings on the matrix trilogy :)

I think doing more Matrix movies might alienate what little fanbase they have left at this point considering how far the Wachowski's took everything in the "Expanded Universe". Especially if they go George Lucas on it and make it all revisionist history (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, anyone?) that is completely different than what they have established with the video games and other works which they themselves wrote for all the Matrix junkies. I think it's best to leave The Matrix saga as a fondly remembered and oft misunderstood piece of cinematic history that had it's time.

I thought revolutions was a bad movie--but that battle at the breach excused everything. One of the visually/viscerally most amazing war sequences ever shot in my opinion.

Also while reloaded did nothing for the story and moved nothing forward the car chase I think should have a special place in cinema history.

Those two movies would work a lot better as a single storyline... But hey, the directors were enjoying their fame and had huge budgets to dedicated to each part of their great story.

Who am I to crap on that? :biggrin5:

Actually, I recently watched Reloaded again, and it basically describes everything neo must do (and alludes to why), essentially explaining all the "ergo" crap. ALSO, one thing I noticed, is that any time there is a group fight, no one waits around for neo to kick their ass individually; they all just try to attack at once and that's half the reason the fight sequences are still so epic.

But, yeah, it should have ended with the first one and, like avatar, the Matrix series would have been perfect for 3D.

The only way, IMO, to top (or even equal) the original Matrix would be to do a Morpheus or someone origin story. And have the trailers look like a regular crappy action movie starring Laurence Fisburn with no mention or hint of the Matrix whatsoever. Then, halfway into the second act drop the Matrix bomb and mind fuck the audience. Basically, trick them.

This would of course fail for MANY reasons, but mostly because the jig would be up after the first week and then the surprise wouldn't be fun for anyone else.
