I'm looking for a cheap offline editor that does 23.98 timelines. I have been working with Final Cut Express editing 23.98 footage in 29.97 timelines and am getting tired of the complexity in adjusting it for online work after.

I'd like a program around $100 that can edit 23.98 dv stuff for simple offline with a big brother like FCP to do online stuff with.

I work at a school so that's why my question is so strange. I am frustrated that there does not seem to be any 24p support in the light version of the NLE's.

Any advice?

I don't know how different Express is, but I use 2398 timelines all the time in FCP. I would think you could do it too if you just change your user preferences or timeline settings. Let me know if you have a specific question in terms of how to do it and I'll see if I can help, though again, I understand your frustration if it is just a difference between FCP vs. Express.

FCE doesn't support 23.98 timebases, hence why the James is asking this question.

But James, unfortunately, I don't think there's an NLE out there for $100 that will actually handle 23.98 (I could be wrong). FCP, Avid and Premiere Pro all do - but those all cost well beyond $100. About the only thing you can do is what you already have been doing - converting from 23.98 to 29.97 for off-line and back to 23.98 for on-line using conversion software. I too think it's strange that FCE still doesn't support 23.98, especially considering it's a "prosumer" NLE and many prosumer cameras shoot 23.98 now. But then again, FCE hasn't received a major update in like 3 years.

If this is for a school, Apple does do academic licensing.

Since 98% of what the students are doing is straight cut editing I am reluctant to have pro installed on each machine. Unfortunately FCE is dying and frustrating and I'd like to upgrade to a nle that has 23.98 timelines as that is primarily what we shoot.

Premiere Elements?

Media Composer student pricing is $299 and includes 4 years worth of upgrades. I believe FCP has student pricing as well. Have you looked into that?
