  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Vuze.com - 2k ProRes or 2k H264? Which do you prefer

2k ProRes@80mbit versus 2k Lossless H264 @50mbit.

Option A: IF we post 2k ProRes the files will be in the 3GB file range for 3 minutes and only FCP owners will be able to watch it. Your looking at a multihour download.

Option B : If we post in H264 then anyone with Quicktime will be able to watch it. It's a more democratic format. Downloaders are looking at 700-900mb files which can be downloaded in an hour or so.

Thus it makes more sense to upload h264 for smaller files size and to allow a more global viewers to watch what LART has shot in a reasonable quality at 2k resolution.

What are your thoughts? Tell us why or why not!

Hey, how about CineForm?

Simply down load the 15 day demo to do the encodes... then easily viewed on both platforms with the freely downloadable demos that install and leave the decoders active even after they time-out...

I haven't checked the data rates, but I think the 4:4:4 CineForm files are about the same if not smaller sized than 4:2:2 ProRes...

Higher quality and both PC and Mac friendly...
 
I'd rather have smaller h.264 stuff.

Jim your absolutely right cineform is the same as Prores 422, the problem is downloading time/bandwidth and a 15 day demo is too short of a period of time . A high end app like cineform is great for those understand codecs but the average person deals with h264 everyday 2k is just a bonus.
 
I vote for both. Don't forget ProRes is 10 bit, but QuickTime's H264 implementation is only 8 bit (I think) and has gamma issues.
 
Both please, if possible. Otherwise, go with H.264

I vote cineform.

Codec is free (hehe well at least the *dec part of the codec is) and at 2k RGB it can be a lower datarate than 4k REDCode. It's 4:4:4 (unlike pro-res) and most importantly is multi-platform.

And actually I would prefer 1080p Divx over h264 since it's a lot less processor intensive. H264 is a dog on windows.
 
A lot of people don't have Macs and/or FCP, so please also post H264 versions so that everyone will be able to read the files...
I never tried Cineform, but it sounds nice too, an Gavin is right : H264 is very processor intensive on a PC.

Divx might be a possiblity if it can do 2k......To be clear we can physically do both but I don't want 4 redundant files. We are uploading 1080p and 720p versions which will be watched thru our embedded player for everyone. I'm reaching out to the REDUser community to gauge what form they want the highest quality to be in because I want everyone to be able to watch this. So the Choice is 80mbit (lossy) ProRes or Lossless H264. Cineform or ProRes means 2-3GB+ files which WILL take about 20hrs+ to download verus 800mb H264.

Gavin have you done 2k Divx's?

I say Lossless H264 @50mbit. But how about we then put up a poll for each of the clips, and users can vote for say, 5 clips to also be put up in ProRes.

Just use the forum's poll option after the clips have been up for about a week. Then we all can decide which ones are worth seeing in 2k ProRes@80mbit.
 
I downloaded divx pro and need to do a 2k test but as far as high quality cross-platform goes divx would be perfect but I need to still test,test,test....
