  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VOGUE + RED

i don't think so. Here in Switzerland all new eAd Billboards are 9:16 which looks VERY vertical. I don't like it, but their investment in vertical Adspace doesn't give me much hope... at least for Switzerland.

Check this month's Vogue ( April ) for our first and biggest print ad ever... 8 page fold out featuring Rooney Mara shot on EPIC by David Fincher, lit by our good friend David Devlin. You need to see this printed.

The power of DSMC... shoot motion and extract single stills for not only print covers.. but massive fold-out spreads like this.

Sure to be a collectors item for our friends.

So pretty can this be shared on FB?

I must have missed it. How did you get censored?

Jim

I am a big RED Fan as well, can even call me a fanatic. But still facts are facts. And I feel a bit disappointed at the moment when I tell a fact and get censored without and explanation from a team that I really believe in.

I just wanted to point out that Meisel has been shooting the Vogue Italy covers since 1988, your ad says that Greg shot Vogue Italy cover with Epic. Shooting a cover for the main magazine or for the supplement is a big difference in our industry. People might get wrong ideas. Nothing that important.

Our understanding is that Greg did shoot a cover for Vogue Italy on RED. I'll be happy to check it out but Greg confirmed it himself. BTW... Greg's list of magazine covers and inserts, along with motion for magazines on the web is well documented.

After checking... Greg shot the Vogue Italy cover for the special edition "Suggestions", which is shown on the 2nd row number two of the Vogue insert. That counts.

There are also several covers missing from our ad because we couldn't get permission to publish... including the Lady Gaga cover on Harper's (no makeup).

They both have shot covers for Vogue on RED... Greg and Meisel. We didn't mean to take anything away from Meisel.. One of his Vogue Italia covers that Meisel shot with RED is actually in this ad ( and we credited him )

Btw.. I just checked out your website Koray.. some nice stuff on there.

Some great stuff!

I really love this idea. Shooting video and taking the BEST of the best stills and using them for print. With higher FPS we can get some great motion images as well. Sky is the limit, game changer.

Dear Jim and Jannard,

First of all I have to say that my intention is not to be a policeman, I do not know why but somehownI felt like that. My intention was just to help you guys if you have missed anything. For me shooting Vogue Suggestions is same as shooting for the main magazine since the Legend Meisel is the owner of the cover area :)

i am a big fan of Red, more like a fanatic, so I am one of your big suppoerters, believe me. Therefore I do not want Red to get any bad reputation, because when u say cover of Vogue Italia some people could react horribly.

Anyway as I sad my intetion was to be constructive, and I pretty like what Greg is doing.

And thank u for your kind words about my work. I have done 3 covers as well for Bazaars many editions and the 4th one with Carolyn Murphy will be out this April.

Best,

Hi Will, thank you for your answer. I know that i'm not completely on topic. But i would love to hear from someone who actually does Shootings like these:
If you do HDRx, how do you set up your 2nd stream to have 180°? I just see +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +6 as options.

If my calculations are right, i would set up my settings as following:
Motion Stream (A):
FPS: 24
ISO 250
F:2.8
Shutter: 1/48

Still Stream (B)
FPS 24
ISO 1000 (2 Stops over ISO 250)
F:2.8
Shutter: 1/196 (HDRx +2)

am i correct? And if it were so. why would any photographer want to compromise having all his stills shot at ISO 1000 since in still Photography every detail counts, where as in motion you tend to downsample?

Can anyone comment on this? This is a main point that i have struggles to understand. Thank you!

This is awesome! Congrats! Rooney is amazing, so are David and RED!

Hi Daniel,

Let me try to help you:

When you use HDRx as you see the only selectable option is the +values. +vaules uses the shutter angle to capture a faster image to preserve highlites.
X-track is not designed to be used as a still stream but doable (just like push/pull process). I have never tested it, I will test it 2morrow for sure. IMO it will fork with close up shots but
when the ratio of the subject gets smaller ( like a full length shot) the noise will be a problem.

So far I have used frame grabbing 3 times and all the images I have used for print was when the model was not moving at all. Motion blur is the main problem when using frame grabbing.
I do not know what the future will bring us but for know there is no other method that u can use. Try to keep your model still and use those images.

It is totally up to your taste may be u can have a 90 degree shutter and feel that look is suitable for your film and do safer frame grabs. DSMC is a great idea for photography but it is just
at its early stages, I believe the near future will bring us some more technologies. Who could have imagined HDRx.

And also keep that in mind that 90% of the Fashion Ads are product based. Models are just hangers who give the feeling to the outfits. Clients are more demanding, they love megapixels. Back in old days we were shooting with Nikon D100 (6MP) and it was fine, everybody was happy but now everybody is used to clear sharp images and 6mp do not function anymore.
