  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Visual greatness...

I didn't notice the noise in the theater, I thought it looked great. Interesting to hear the Blue Ray has issues.

Kemalettin, thanks for posting the screenshots! I agree that there is noise visible, but to my eyes it is subtle and 'natural'. However, if there was no such noise in the theatrical file, then it would be very strange that there is noise on the BRD.

I saw the film in 35mm, and there was grain visible - perhaps the BRD was mastered from a 35mm print?? Surely not, but you never know.

I saw plenty of noise at the cinema in Promethius!.....most of the film was crisp and beautiful but there were definitely noisy-as-hell shots in there. Same with Magic Mike and Loom. I'm not a hater, I own a scarlet and love it.

What doesn't bother me is the noise in these to frame grabs though....that's more like grain. I'm talking about ugly noise...you know?

I like the Noise .....Noise is great .....An image without noise it s like those rich old lady making some skin plastic chirurgy to finally look like a plastic bags :)

like this?
im not sure if its real noise (cuz of low light) or artifical grain.
You ll guys start again 5K discussion i know i know but this is not about 5K or 8K nobody cares about it.End media is bluray so if you do shitty bluray like this people will think epic sucks..
check this movie on bluray and screenshots (shot on alexa)

this is what i call grain...(not shot on digital or 5K ;) it looks superb

yeah the visuals blew me away I loved it, and yeah grain is a post effect I agree, what drives me nuts is when people take their dslr, red or alexa footage and add a film grain effect! dear god no you are tainting it!

Matt,

Do you have a color reel? I might have some projects in the future.

toss me a mail: production [at] theridgeboys dot com

Done, sent you something just now. Thanks Will :)

And if I could try and divert this visual greatness back onto its tracks...

Do any redusers know what happens in the process of grading for bluray? Is it a separate grade than for cinema? Also, I feel that I can get my red stuff to look like Alexa stuff (I've shot on both, own a scarlet) but it takes a bit of work. Isn't that the whole point of RED though? More flexibility?

It's probably more on the lines of a REC709 broadcast grade. Sounds like they did a sub par job.
