  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VirtualDub meets Redcode RAW

Note 24bpp image and 16bit audio only?

Note 24bpp image and 16bit audio only?

From what I can see on the link, the plug in truncates the 48bpp data down to 24bpp for VirtualDub,

Quote:

[Decoding is supported to RGB color representations only:
16 bit RGB (555)
16 bit RGB (565)
24 bit RGB (888)
32 bit RGB (888) (dummy alpha channel)

Redcode images are decoded at 16 bits per channel, but since VirtualDub can only handle 8 bits per channel at its best, the lower bits are simply shaved off, significantly reducing output color resolution. This is fine for creating proxies and intermediates, but not optimal for online color corrections or finishing.]

Not 48 bit RGB 16,16,16.

So it would be most useful for extracting the Audio from the R3D files and making a fast workprint.

For use with my programs you could use it to make BMP frames for editing, but you will get histogram gaps if you do much color correction from 8x3bit data, you really need to use REDCINE to get 16x3bit files, well 12x3 into 16x3 since the camera is 12bit raw data.

The link indicates the R3D plugin is dropping the bottom bits from the 24bit audio to get 16bit audio...

amazing, it actually works. I can view R3D on my completely antiquated PC with no special video cards or anything else... very cool!

Wow! Thank you, Gábor!

I was really hoping someone would do this, but I didn't expect it so quickly.

I wonder if the SDK will support a direct-to-8-bit decoding in the future.

I want R3D integration to FFMpeg :)

The Red SDK license does not permit the SDK source code to be distributed, or even your own code if it uses their headers, so any open-source tools can't use it directly. There may be some workaround, but any R3D module would not be directly in FFMPEG, at least as I understand it.

Yeah, I don't know that much about the structure of FFMpeg - I was sort of hoping it could use a static module in a similar way to VirtualDub here.

I love this -

Is there a 64-bit version available?

No, and it's not even planned. The SDK is 32-bit only at the moment, and I don't have a 64-bit environment for testing, so there.

Very good plugin. Well done.
It is much easier to have *.avi files for offline now.

One question have rised.
When I do render out it only uses 30% of processor power.
We have Scultrail wit 8 cores here.
From 2K we corvert at arround 5.5fps and only two cores have been seriusly used.
But we are able to launch several VirtualDubs at once and with 4 of those we get processor usage about 95% and all are converting at about 5.5fps.
WinXP Pro SP3 here. Used codec: Matrox Axo 50Mbit MPEG-2 I-frame avi.

Do others have the same?
Is there a way to speed up just one VirtualDub?

Priit

Is there a way to speed up just one VirtualDub?

Unfortunately VirtualDub's video processing is serialized: it's not using several threads/CPUs to process different video frames, but a single thread to process all frames sequentially. This is explained in an old posting on the author's blog (see http://virtualdub.org/blog/pivot/entry.php?id=18).

As such, a single instance of VirtualDub will never use all 8 of your CPUs. You might however be able to speed things up by running several instances of VirtualDub, each batch processing a shared job list. Theoretically they should be processing different files of the batch in parallel. I have not tried this, but it seems a valid idea to me. Let us know if it works out for you.

Is it possible to get audio from this? I have tried and I can't seem to get it to work. I recorded audio on mini-xlr port 1 on the red and got signals on the camera itself reading that it was getting audio, but I can't hear anything from vd and I tried exporting the wavs and got nothing.

VirtualDub can export audio from R3D files to avi files.
May be you can check with RedCine do the files have audio included.
RedCine can (slowly) playback audio.

If you have QuickTime proxy files, try to open those in QuickTime player.
You woun't get picture but Cntr+I will sho the info.

On Mac there are more choices.

Yeah, I don't even get an audio preview in RedCine (I checked the audio box as well). I know that the camera is getting audio as I can see the channel volume and can hear audio if I plug a microphone in to the camera. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Is it possible to get audio from this? I have tried and I can't seem to get it to work.

Yes, audio should work, as of V1.1. A few things to check:

1, After you open the R3D clip in VirtualDub, click the "File information..." item in the File menu. On the file properties dialog, is there indication of a recorded audio stream? How many/which channels does it report?

If it shows no channels, then the R3D importer cannot find an audio stream in the file (it may have not been recorded, or the file got corrupted).

If there are audio channels, it is possible that it's not the first 2 channels which are decoded by default.

2, In the View menu choose "Audio display". A waveform display should show beneath the video preview. Does it have any visible waveforms when you scrub through the file?

If it doesn't then try changing the "Source audio" setting to "Stream 2" in the Audio menu.

If still nothing shows up on the audio display, it is possible that the audio level was too low at recording. Open the clip again and try ticking the "Normalize" checkbox on the open options dialog. If you get a lot of noise, then recording was enabled on the camera, but it received no signal.

3, If none of this helps and you're absolutely sure that there should be audio, then you might want to open the clip in another application as recommended in earlier replies. See if you get audio there.

Thanks for the help with that! For some reason as soon as I opened that up, I was able to get a waveform and then audio, still no audio from RedCine though. I must be doing something wrong there, not that it maters now as I am able to export audio from VD.

Virtualdub1.8.8 cant load the plugin

Virtualdub1.8.8 cant load the plugin

Him i did try to load the plugin as usual and seems nothing load, and r3D file cant open.

is it take long long time to load the plugin?
it' has only a folder plugins but not plugins32

anyone can tell me what version of Virtualdub using??
i m on a sony Vaio 1.7GHz laptop

thanks
K.M.Lo

it' has only a folder plugins but not plugins32

You have to put it in the plugins32 folder. If it does not exist, you have to create it manually.

The plugins folder is for older video filters only, not for input plugins.

It should work on V1.8.8, that's how I'm using it currently and that's also what the screenshots were taken from.

GKertai
i m using ver 1.8.8 and i set up laogins32 sub folder within same folder .
but when i load from video>filter>load> the ok button never work

i dont knwo why??
i m using sony laptop 1.7GHZ centrino and only 512MB ram

any idea??

my apology

my apology

suddenly the last time it load and able to open r3d files, but still i see no show of filter
i just save the processing setting for future

perhaps this is the cheapest and simple way to log the takes of red.r3d files

strange!!
