How do you guys upload videos for Vimeo for best results?

Myself I normally export from FCPX ProRes and then I convert it to H264 with around 15-20mbit (I would use higher if my upload speed faster faster).

However this way we actually have 3 transcodes, would be great to use 1 less.

Cheers!

Generally, you would export the highest resolution for your master file, then do your compression/transcoding from that master file.

Handbrake is an incredibly fast and free app that does that transcoding/compression from your master file pretty quickly. I use it all the time if I'm not bring things into AME.

For shorter 30sec videos I just upload a ProRes 422 or 422 HQ file. For slightly longer pieces I use ProRes LT but it can introduce compression artifacts in the shadows if its quite a dark grade. So its only suitable for some material.

For longer videos I export ProRes 4444 out of the NLE/Resolve etc and compress to x264 using x264gui on a PC. Or lately Handbrake on the Mac.

Can you upload Prores and DNX directly to Vimeo? I thought it was only compressed flavors of H264?

Is everyone that posted here sending a 1080p Pro Res file to AME? Or are you using higher than 1080 resolution to compress to 1080p x264?

I have always taken a 1080p Pro Res 422 file and converted that to 1080p h.264 using Apple Quicktime Player 7 with everything set to "best" with good results for both youtube and vimeo (for vimeo i upload a 720p though).

But now I am curious about what benefits I could have if I switched to AME from Quicktime Player 7, x264 codec instead of h.264, and I'm also wondering about the resolution of the file that I'm converting into an x264 file and if I should use something higher than 1080p

for short subjects, commercials, music videos etc.

Thanks guys. I will give handbreak a try. It has lots of cool settings.

X264 via AME

+1

Works like a champ. Remember, you'll never win with web video - Vimeo will always do their own special sauce transcode before making it live. I just try to meet the top end of their posted specs to a T.
