So I have a project I shot against a black background and I underexposed (my fault - stupid me didn't trust the histogram). I've compressed it for viewing on a desktop from a quicktime file, it holds up with minimal noise, I've burned it to DVD MPEG 2 it again had minimal noise. But when I uploaded it youtube the blacks when to shit and when I mean shit its horrible unwatchable. I am now compressing for Viemo (using Adobe Media Econders built in Viemo 1080p setting).

Which one handles video better where compression and noise maybe an issue? Youtube or Vimeo?

Thanks,

Tommy

(Also submitted it to withoutbox's online submission engine and it didn't seem to have a major noise issue).

Yep definitively Vimeo. Also if you upgrade to a plus account then you get 2-pass encoding vs 1-pass. A pro account gets you 1080p but unfortunately only YouTube supports 4k at the moment.

As for Youtube -> check their upload/encoding rules & best practices...
Most people try to shoot the best encode they have to the upload but you can also encode to a real streaming-format in advance so you'll get a better idea how it will look like later on. No problems here with YT - but with my current project I'm usually on the 'brighter' and totally opposite site (shooting against white or just greenscreen with colorful backgrounds - no black at all despite the fonts).

As well as 2-pass encoding, the big advantage with Vimeo is keeping the same URL for a film. So if you make some changes and re-up the file you don't lose the URL that you've been telling everyone about. YT doesn't offer that unless you have a high viewership rate.

I'm not really all that impressed with the ability to stream 4k on youtube. Even with my TWC 50mbps connection (usually running around high 30's low 40's) it takes a while to pre-buffer and then on a 30 second clip buffers at least two more times. Plus I ain't got a 4k monitor to watch 4k in all its glory :)

So with vimeo pro - it adds a second layer of 2-pass encoding after I send it out from Adobe Media Encoder?

Keep in mind there's a bug in Chrome/Vimeo where black levels get raised to 16-235, and not properly stretched out to 0-255 range right now. Keep filing bug reports untill they fix it.

Interesting. I actually had that issue with VLC and Chrome was the solution (temporarily) - the main solution was to change nvidia settings in the control panel (as this was from an nvidia card)

This is what I got...
