I took a lighting workshop today and was honored be able to watch this Master at work.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005936/

It was dreamlike to sit 4' away from him while we screened Close Encounters shot by shot as he deconstructed his DP work. Holy shit there was no Resolve back in the day yet they pulled off some cool stuff in camera . . . flying blind!!

Later on we went downstairs to participate in building an interior daylight and nighttime lighting scheme. Real fun to watch Vilmos at work directing the grips on set. Lighting is a game of inches.

The guys over at GCI put on a good show. Check them out at: www.GlobalCinematography.com

Next time I'm going to offer loaning them my Dragon rather than that ragass Arri ;-)

Cheers!

The 2 day workshop was $375

Next time some RU newbie asks what they should spend their money on . . .

BTW: that light in his glasses in the screening room shot was the reflection of the climax shot from CE where the abducted folks return. Wish I had more than an iPhone. They broke up the mirrors on the ramp to create a God ray effect to the light coming out of the spaceship and reflecting up. Who knew?

I nearly came to this before my day got "busied up". But I'll tell you anytime you get somebody with a few years and some good mileage willing to discuss their craft it's always worth a listen. I spy on folks on set all the time for this very reason :)

If they put this together again I'll do my best to attend.

I had the opportunity to chat with him in Hungarian at my workplace a few years back. He was remastering one of his early movies.

Hey Zeb

This looks awesome, what a pleasure to learn from someone like Vilmos.

How can we can get a forum section on RedUser dedicated to the various high level workshops on offer? I'm sure many other Redusers would like this too.

When I started in Photography 25years ago, my Great Uncle gave me an Old Kowa medium format camera and pronounced wisely 'Welcome to the Life Long Apprenticeship'

Redusers seem to have the same philosophy.................... We never stop learning.

Hi Zeb,

Thanks for the positive feedback and when we at GCI plan another workshop seminar - we will be sure to make it known on Reduser :)

For those of you who missed this opportunity, we do have our "normal" set of classes beginning on May 17th - May 31st. Classes take place weeknights from 6p-10p and weekends 9a-5p in Los Angeles. Vilmos teaches a regular class during this session which includes screenings and hands-on workshops and students are the "Crew" for Vilmos!

Other classes in Level 1 include Digital Cinematography (with David Stump, ASC - head of ASC camera tech committee), Virtual Cinematography, Tools & Concepts for Digital (including a hands-on Resolve tutorial), Previsualization, Technology of Lighting, etc.

For more info on the next set of classes, visit www.globalcinematography.com for dates, cost, classes, etc. We have a special tuition stipend going on right now for the May 17 session and will have a new class, "Cinematography for Visual Effects". You can also PM me with specific questions or email info@globalcinematography.com

Vilmos is a terrific guy, and he has a million stories. Very tiny guy, too -- I think he's like 5'4". But he has a very large charisma.

David Stump is also a very sharp guy who knows the technical end backwards and forwards. His new book Digital Cinematography is very informative.

I can't believe it's that cheap. Amazing

Hi Everyone,

GCI is offering another Master Class - this one about Digital Cinematography, with David Stump, ASC leading the course. David is head of the ASC Camera Committee and author of the new book, "Digital Cinematography". The two-day class takes place May 31st - June 1st (9am-5pm).

I opened a new thread with info about the new class - details can be found on the website: www.globalcinematography.com/masterclass

Hello all,

In response to the popularity of our first Master Class with Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC - Global Cinematography Institute will be hosting a new Master Class Seminar about all things Digital Cinematography on May 31st-June 1st in Los Angeles, including discussions of theory, cameras, workflow, digital intermediate and hands-on demonstrations about how to properly evaluate new camera systems. The course will be led by David Stump, ASC - Director of Photography, GCI Faculty Member and author of the new book "Digital Cinematography: Fundamentals, Tools, Techniques and Workflows" as well as the chair of the ASC Camera Committee.

Other seminars within the Master Class include discussion of workflow and the growing role of the Digital Intermediate by Hollywood-DI Colorist Aaron Peak, and an overview of the DIT profession, collaboration with the DP and how to manipulate the digital image on-set, by DIT and Cinematography Instructor at GCI - Jason Knutzen. All seminars are presented through the perspective of the cinematographer!

Tickets are available for this two-day even for $410 on the Global Cinematography Institute website (www.globalcinematography.com/masterclass) and space is limited to the first 30 students to register (class is quickly approaching capacity!). All students who enroll in the class will receive a copy of David Stump's book Digital Cinematography. For more information, visit the website or send GCI an email (info@globalcinematography.com)

Happy shooting!

-Zach
