I'm wondering with viewing 3d onset, is it as simple as buying a 3dtv that has dual sdi inputs, and
going straight from the epic sdi outputs to the 3d tv?

Or is there some box in between the camera and monitor needed?

Thanks
Troy Smith

With our 3D Rig (2x REDONE) we are currently using a box called "Stereobrain" from Inition.

With this - or with something similar - you can output a lot of 3d formats: Anaglyph, Side by Side, Interlaced etc.. And you can test some vergence, flip flop the image, etc etc. Best of all, you can monitor stereo using any commercial tv set that support side by side, so you don't need a specialized 3D monitor with dual hdsdi input.

Just my 2c.

Thankyou, sound like a good way to go.

Thanks geoff and peter for the info.

Hi Troy,
The AJA is indeed a good little box at a cheap price, however I would point out a few critical features that it doesn't currently support. It only outputs (squashed) side-by-side or (squashed) above-below, which means that you are compromising the quality of your 3D monitoring straight away (the display has to stretch the images back out). It will apparently support frame packing at some point in the future but not currently. The StereoBrain will output an interlaced feed for passive 3D TVs or frame packed for active TVs (I highly recommend you get a Passive TV for on-set viewing if you don't have one already). The latest version of the StereoBrain, SB1+, also supports Progressive input feeds (Epic outputs P only). This ensures that the absolute best quality is maintained.
The real difference, however, with the StereoBrain is that it also offers two programmable HD-SDI outputs so that you can hook up one or two standard 2D monitors in any number of modes. We often send an Anaglyph feed back to a monitor on the rig for the rig tech to make alignment adjustments...
More info here, if you're interested.

Campbell
