Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I find the delay is similar to delays I see with Sony and Panasonic cameras. When I open both eyes, I find the camera is just maybe a frame or 2 behind reality. If you think about all the processing a camera must do, it makes sense. The light is basically hitting the imager and your left eye at the same precise millisecond in time, but the camera has to process it and display it before it can hit your right eye. It cant do that faster than the speed of light, so its going to be a bit behind. I would say not more than 2 frames at best.
I'd be surprised if it was more than a frame. Point the camera at a TV screen and watch cuts happening in any programme with one eye on the TV and the other in the viewfinder.
1. point one red to CRT or other monitor on which running timecode is displayed.
2. zoom or frame the shot so just the timecode is visible in the shot.
3. point second RED in a way that both the monitor with timecode AND red's LCD monitor is IN the frame.
4. shoot that for a few secs.
5. check the footage and see how big delay is.
Or, hold the viewfinder in front of the camera and shoot it to get the infinite regress thing goin'. Then, pan the camera back and forth slightly. Since each progressive image is a "cycle" behind, the presence of delay will make the series of images "snake" down the line. If there is no delay they will move in unison. There is a definite delay in the LCD.
ok. i did my homework. not in the best imaginable conditions, (just few minutes to do the test) but at least it's something.
as you can see from the pictures THERE IS a delay (as predicted), but at least in my case (25fps) delay is not constant - it drifts from one frame to something between one and two, up to two frames.
take a look.
i was not in the position to check this with other frame rates - just 25fps, so maybe this is not too precise.
on the picture above - you can see that TC on the VF is showing 10 and some kind of ghost image inside of the "0"
same situation above.
here is something different - you can clearly see that delay is 2 frames. (at least for 25 fps setup)
if anyone needs more test pictures - i will gladly put some new ones - maybe with different timerates.
