  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

diving into LUT application in Weapon. I don't think this LOOK>VIDEO interface could be more confusing if someone tried. I've read the manual and experimented with trying to apply LUTs to different monitor paths, etc. Maybe someone here can help. Please walk me through this.

I would love to have the following configuration :

1. LCD Displays DC2/RG3 while HD SDI Displays LUT on top of DC2/RLF
seems like maybe the most common application so operator has LUTless but decent contrast image and village has LUT.

I don't understand why there are 4 separate dialogue boxes for achieving one thing. Here is my suggestion:

Keep the LUT tab for loading LUTs and managing them on the camera/SSD.
Have the Monitor Config where you select the output path (LCD, HDSDI) and then fill in each parameter (Color Space, Gamma, and LUT for each output path). Why do we need the other tabs- it seems like it's complicating and convoluting the process. Maybe I'm just not seeing the light?

So has anyone been able to have DC2/RG3 on the EVF but have the HDSDI show DC2/RLF with a LUT? If so please tell me how.

Yes this s totally possible, don't have my camera in front of me sorry, it's actually all really easy once you get the hang of it

There is a video provided by Sean at RED, but it might be a bit dated, not sure.

Thanks for sharing that video. It is old firmware...before they had the 3D LUT support that the weapon has. Jake, maybe you can share the proper method of accomplishing what I want to do? I'm going to do some more tests now and see if I can figure it out.

Like I said Im not in front of my camera, but choose "graded" and red log film on the first page, then use the other page to select the 3d lut and the graded gamma space of rg3 or whatever you want

Sitting here with the Weapon and a touchscreen LCD and HDSDI monitor.

GOAL: DC2/RG3 on LCD plus DC2/RLF with 3D LUT on HDSDI. Probably a very common use for 3D LUTs. (operator sees non-graded flatter but not log image and village sees graded image/LUT)

I found the right combination to do this (sort of).

SETTINGS>LOOK>VIDEO>VIDEO SOURCE
VIDEO SOURCE must be set to RLF. I believe in later menu settings (MONITOR CONFIG) when the word NEUTRAL is used, it passes through the Gamma that you set here in VIDEO SOURCE. Color Space DC2 and GRADED GAMMA SPACE REDGAMMA3

SETTINGS LOOK>VIDEO>LOOK CONFIG
Look A there are no option but to flip. LOOK B set to LUT (which is loaded in on the VIDEO>LUT menu)

SETTINGS LOOK>MONITOR CONFIG
LCD2 LOOK set to LOOK A (DC2/RLF)
CURVE set to GRADED

HDSDI LOOK set to LOOK B
CURVE set to NEUTRAL

These settings accomplish what i want HOWEVER on the LCD EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE VIEWING RG3 the HISTOGRAM IS SHOWN AS RLF!! I don't understand why this choice was made. If the operator is looking at RG3 he is going to want to set exposure based on that viewing gamma. Maybe it's just me but I want the histogram to show what I'm looking at. If I want to see a flatter histogram I will select the RAW VIEW TOOL!!!!

Please please please make it so the histogram represents the viewing gamma. or at least make it user selectable.

I would also highly suggest greatly simplifying the LOOK>VIDEO menu and application of LUTs. At least use unifying terminology throughout the menus (I'm looking at you VIDEO SOURCE and NEUTRAL). But really, it is very confusing and convoluted and should be simplified.
