  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Video card...

Are the next MBP coming with an ATI card instead of the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT ???

I have been testing on several different PC setups and can confirm that ATI graphics cards might work on preview, but not on actual output. I have tested the following ATI cards:

Radeon X600
Radeon X1300
Radeon X1900

All failed to generate usable output.

I purchased and installed a Nvidia 8600 GTS in one of the machines and it now generates usable output from some codecs.

Still doing more testing, but I would agree that on PCs, ATI is not the way to go.

That's strange, because the IBM T43p that I tested (see my post on this page:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5965&page=4)
has ATI video card (an ATI Mobility FIRE GL V3200 to be exact) and preview is working, CC and output also.

Hello Antoine,

Glad that RedCine is working for you with your current graphics card. Perhaps the GL V3200 has different behavior than the three Radeon cards that I have tested so far. The T43P is a laptop, correct? How is the speed for previewing clips and generating output?

The issue with nvidia are the Apple graphics drivers, not much we can do about that.

Please update the following thread with systems (read the first post for instructions please!) that (don't) work:

yes T43p is a laptop.

for previewing on the T43p I haven't done too many test, but it did play RT with 1/4 size full, I think it didn't with the 1/2.
I have noticed that if you do loop(s) it helps.

For rendering it took around half an hour to output 325 frames CC and scaled @ 720p jpeg animation from the 2K REDCODE RAW.
Long but at least I could play with REDCINE and output something.

I was using a local hardrive.

I can do more test on my personnal T41p (the T43p is not mine) which also have a ATI card (a mobily fire gl T2), but I can see that computer with single cpu is not the way to go...
I will also test my intel quad to see the time it take, and I have also to test export to different format/codecs, including dpx.

So, would an older macbook Pro with the ATI Mobility Radeon x1600 be a better option at present than the newer MB Pros?

Let me input some more details:
on the T43p
I was playing the Jim's 2k REDCODE RAW. It was definitely not playing RT in half rez.
It seems to me that as it plays it puts the images in the RAM, so it will play RT after one loop (need to play every frame)

output was set to best quality (there's a standard and a draft)

on a dual processor, I've only saw one working, both playing and outputing.
on the dual processor computer I have output dpx, and mov in two different codecs and all went fine with all frame rendered.
