  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VFX test shot on RED...

Nice work, thanks for sharing!

Two mistakes you probably already know about:
  • Right when the spikes emerge two additional butterflies appear out of nowhere.
  • The spike on the man's left cheek seems to change its orientation when he turns away at the end.

if you matchmoved a low res model to the movements of your actor, you could get much nicer effects by having the butterflies cast some occlusion onto the man in a seperate shadow pass.

ps u can critic my fx work in a month when i get my red. tell me i suck
:)

Finally got caught up with this thread.... Awesome shot.

All 3 butterflies that get impaled by the spikes just appear out of nowhere, not just two like big lebowski said. But I'm sure you guys know this, you put them there. :)

Yes, you're right. I saw it too when I watched the clip again but didn't bother to update my post.

you will think you died and went to heaven when that package arrives.

I am doing a basic shadow pass just using the butterfly alpha blurred and matted out with the alpha of the human... don't really feel like making a proxy and matchmoving for this shot, even though it would be nice ... Also re-rendering all the butterfly's because these ones were made for an NTSC project and are way to fat, I think they would fall out of the air! I'm ready to get on with another VFX test this weekend, CGI bullet hit explosions chasing someone who is running.

I would guess this is because a fairly simple particle system was used for the butterfly 'swarm', and the 3 hero butterfly's were added as separate elements. I'm sure with a little effort the 3 hero butterfly's could be animated separately to end up in their heath poses to stop them appearing out of nowhere. The boys obviously know this, it's just extra work. It looks awesome nonetheless ! Good job !

This is looking better ... Well done!

Personally, I would work some more on making the butterflies more realistic, but other than that, amazing work.

Just a question:- the shakiness just after he catches some butterflies, is that meant to be on purpose?

Looking forward to see more!

Thanks

Great Stuff! What do you use for tracking the shot, especially the face?

hey i FINALLY got my red and am having problems tracking my footage in boujou. any tips you can give to how your shot was tracked , seems like auto tracking is not gonna work for this stuff..
ive been getting better results with syntheyes.

here is a link to the raw BG plate. it had to be stabilized, projected onto a sphere and "re-shot" in 3d with the tracking data from the green screen shot.http://www.dv3productions.com/AMARIAH/roof_push_in_mirrored.mov

Hey, I just found this post and your workflow sounds a bit of something i'm experimenting with, and I thought you might be interested/ share experience. We've used a way to remap a handheld shaky camera to a 3d object (after tracking) and re-render a clean move. This technique could also be used to match different back- and foregroundplanes.

Actually, coming monday we're gonna shoot with the red for the first time. We will shoot a green screen studio with tracking markers, the people in it will be reprojected in 3d onto geometry, so we can remap camera motion in post. We've rented a RED with a 14mm lens, shooting in 4K, hoping that my resolution will be high enough to zoom in later, giving a lot of freedom panning etc. end result will be 720p.

I might post my workflow and experiences on this forum when we're done.
