  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Very serious RedCine limitation (bug??) when using PDLog685, or am mising something?

A nice post in creative cow explaining the Cineon Log..

Somehow when im trying to add the link its being replaced with a ...Ihatecows... thing.

Because its a very good article i strongly recommend to put the exact phrase "oconnell_pete/cineon.php" on google and it will be the first find...

From wikipedia about Cineon:

"The format has a notion of the "black point" and "white point" used for conversion to more limited range video signals. Conventionally, these points are 95 and 685 on the 0-1023 scale (but should be adjusted based upon actual negative content). Pixel values above 685 are "brigher than white", such as the sun, chrome highlights, etc. The concept of a 'soft clip' was introduced to make the rolloff of whites more natural. Pixel values below 95 represent black values exposed on the negative (the clear base of the film). These values can descend in practice as low as pixel values 20 or 30."

Ok guys, thanks for setting me straight on a couple of points.

So after doing a bit of research... (and a big thanks to Deanan for helping me out here)

To linearize REDLOG, use standard tools setting white = 0, and black = 1023 with gamma = 1.022. If you use these settings and then perform a log-to-lin, you will get almost identical results as a straight linear output from R3D.

The problem with getting linear data into a log curve falls mainly in accurately representing highlight levels. So designing a curve that is closer to PDLog685 but extends highlight range is probably the right thing to do.

But Mike - your post in a lot of ways just backs me up while at the same time correcting me. :) You and Cineworks have done the research and know what's what with RED material. There's no substitute for that.

Evangelos - Deanan and Graeme and the RED crew are insanely busy but very approachable. Drop them a line...

Best,

Lucas
