Unlike original animation, as you can see, you are seeing so much detail in the room. A lots of unnecessary information.
I would like to ask the director and cinematographer, and art director several questions

1. Why does the main character needed to be lit from under her? (I mean, illuminated bed, was that necessity?)
2. Why do you need to make the back ground such a dark!?

... Please use more shadow area.... T_T

I AM SO DISAPPOINTED AS A GHOST IN THE SHELL NERD!!

You didn't actually expect a frame for frame Sin citied version of this movie did you?

With Hollywood budget, I am expected to see very considerable cinematography and it's production design, frame by frame. It's called "Mise En scene" and which every single aspect of cinema was supposed to be considered such as art direction, performance, lighting, tone, mood, pace, I mean literally everything. Stage your scene, and that's what you learn when you just get into the film school in the first year.

Thats funny, But from an aesthetic stand point he is right. That stuff really does matter in a lot of cases. Usually they try and make it better, sometimes they make it worse.

It's amazing that Ghost in the Shell (GITS) was released over 20 years ago. I still remember seeing it in an art
theater in Williamsburg, VA with other anime otaku.

What made GITS stand out from the typical anime was the greater philosophical questions about consciousness and life
posed by Kazunori Ito's script and Mamoru Oshii's sublime direction.
The GITS comic had some of these elements but it was much lighter in it's approach.
And of course, Kenji Kawai's haunting music.

The city sequence was some of the best filmmaking the anime genre gave to the world.

The film had a few scenes that really transcended animation and
cinema and became more like an experience.

The original film could have been the usual futuristic action film
but the production staff, led by the above, really set a tone and a vision that bought a lot of depth to
the original comic book.

Looking at some of the clips there seem to be some good ideas in this Hollywood GITS but my
expectation is the good stuff will get undermined by 'bonehead film executive logic' concerned with
quarterly earnings and not about telling a good, memorable and affecting story.

I'm not going to start with the questionable casting choices though it's interesting to see Takeshi "Beat" Kitano
as a lead.

I agree Minu. Yes there is a lot of money behind this Hollywood GITS but I doubt they have the same consideration for the story
and the characters that the original film did. I think this will likely be a project driven more by commerce and much less by creating a thoughtful
adaption. The original anime film found a decent balance with commerce and art.

The frame in the Hollywood version doesn't seem to say much about the world or the characters other than it's set in a stylized "cyber punk" future.

The frame from the original animated film is actually a bit simpler but that weary silhouette backlit by the cityscape definitely hints at the protagonist's (Kusanagi) growing isolation in understanding her own existence.

The images that serve the story tend to impress more than the images for the sake of "coolness".
Maybe this is one of the things that you're picking up on.

......I want to cry.

It hurts my heart. May be some of you think, I might over reacts. I am still young just 30 years old dude, who remembers watching japanese animations that my uncle brought from japan without subtitle at 1996.
My uncle has said "Minu, these are arts, not the cartoon, you might not understand what these animation means. Than, watch them again, and again"

That weekend, I and my OTAKU uncle watched "Akira", "Ghost in the shell", and "My Neighbor Totoro"
I remember my uncle cried, when he watched Totoro <== I still make fun of him lol...

Does this Hollywood movie will give me this kind of memories? I really hoped they don't fuck with my precious memories...

No remake of a movie will ever tarnish the original, unless it's an improvement.

Maybe the director is afraid of shadows...

Best thing you can do is go in with low expectations. I have no skin in the game for Ghost in the Shell. I had the laser disc of it and Akira back in the 90s. Some things should probably not be messed with.

Chris Columbus wanted to change Harry Potter and have it based in the US. Glad he lost out on that one. Sometimes the powers that be just don't get it. It is bad enough they changed the name of the first one in the US. I have mostly given up on movies. I get far more enjoyment out of TV these days as well as documentaries.

You are clearly passionate about Ghost in the Shell and no matter what it will not meet your expectations. How do you feel about the casting of Scarlet? I know a lot of people were not happy about that. She is a wonderful actress and damn funny, but is Caucasian, which is what seems to upset most people.
The top pic makes me think of the 5th Element, not Ghost in the Shell.

Take the latest Star Trek movie. I enjoyed the hell out of it. I am not a trekkie and watched it from an entertainment standpoint and I felt it delivered fun, which is what I was after. I have enjoyed the Star Trek reboot and Enterprise was my favorite of the TV series. Again, not a trekkie and if I were, I am sure they would kick me out for saying I liked Enterprise and the reboots. :)

Rule of a thumb:

Avoid exposing your mind to remakes of classics and every La-La Land's attempt to portray a historical/mythical subject.

This is like when Red brings out a new camera and everyone decides their Epic or Scarlet is now worthless. This hasn't stopped those cameras working like this new film hasn't deleted the original movie and shouldn't impact your enjoyment of it. And it may get more people interested in the original.

I'll forgive someone listening to Joe Bonamassa if I think it will lead to them checking out John Mayall's Bluesbreakers down the line...

Gosh there's a lot of nitpicking here. I love the anime, it's a major inspiration for me. But so far the live action feature looks really good and on point with the atmosphere of the anime. Yes, they might end up trivializing the deeper philosophies and atmosphere, but we don't know that yet. I agree that there's been some whitewashing by choosing Scarlett as the main character but at the same time, the anime didn't have an all-asian lineup of characters, I would even argue that it's ambiguous if Motoko is really asian since the character design inspirations weren't.

All in all I'm actually pretty hyped for this live action remake. It seems they are changing the story a bit, but I'm ok with that if they keep the depth and atmosphere. The style of storytelling is important here. So far it actually looks very good. But judging based off the little we've seen is just nitpicking to the extreme in my opinion. If this doesn't make you feel good then there's not much that can.

...what I mean with atmosphere is this

But calling what we've seen in the teasers so far, "ugly" is just completely out there. The teasers look superb. It needs to be adapted into the photographic medium and judging an entire movie on the decision to not have her in shadow in front of the window is just weird to say the least.

Of course, but you do not know anything about this production and what changes to the story they've taken. You haven't even seen any complete staged scenes yet and you are judging it anyway. Come on.

I share the feeling (perhaps not to the same extent) - the teasers are so clinical and there's very little texture to the images.
Disappointing.
I'm probably going to enjoy the film anyways, lol.
