  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VERY nervous. . . please help: Outputting final film version for final deliverables.

No stroke just yet. . . maybe that will come soon, though.

:-)

I appreciate everyone's help!

Even if you are going to 8 bits in the end use its good to use at least 10bpc if not 16bpc to reduce scaling errors as conversion to the 16-235 limits from 0-255 makes for scaling errors, worse if you go the other way around since you get histogram gaps.

Yeah, I know. And yet, 8-bit crap gets broadcast every day. Have you seen the crap that gets on cable, like reality shows?

16 bits ain't gonna happen soon, but 10-bit log is pretty well entrenched. I have personally taken 4K material and scaled it down to 525 as a full-rez uncompressed QuickTime file in Baselight, and it works fine. It just takes time. Frankly, I think it probably makes more sense to output it all to HDCam-SR, then just use the downconverter in the machine to Digibeta, which is how many (but not all) post houses do it here in LA. We don't have time to do a separate SD pass anymore; we're lucky to get the time to do a 4x3 pan/scan. Standard-def is quickly becoming the bastard stepchild that nobody cares about anymore.
