  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I encountered this problem on a shoot last week of vertical lines through the footage. It was not visible on set via the HD-SDI out. When the footage got to online, they cropped in on the footage and noticed a vertical line of dotted pixels against the white of the hero jacket. Wide shot is for scale reference.

Here you can see the pattern at the pixel level. Seems quite random.

I went through all the footage from this two day commercial and found that this was evident on both days of the shoot. The problem is hard to notice even at HD resolution until something light colored comes over this problematic line. But thanks to my RED Rocket™™™, I was able to closely scrutinize the footage at 1:1. Also, there appear to be a total of three lines of pixels that are affected at times, but the one on the right is generally the worst and the other two appear less frequently. They are on the R3D file as well as the transcoded Quicktimes.

What is particularly frustrating is that in one scene it's there if you look closely, and in the next scene there is no trace of it. Sometimes it starts only midway through a scene. It may have to do with heat, as both shooting days were above 30C here in Cape Town, but under 35C.

I went through my archived R3D files and found the same problem in a shoot two weeks prior, also on a hot day. I shot for the next three days after that in a studio and that footage is absolutely unaffected. So seems to be related to heat.

I am very curious to hear if others out there have experienced anything similar to this. I did have this problem on one shot only in late 2008, but it immediately went away so I stopped worrying about it.

Now it is extremely worrisome to see the footage occur not only on consecutive shooting days but on separate shoots. Has anyone else encountered this? I am going to test today in heat after a factory reset, reinstall of firmware and black balance. Hoping I don't have to send camera back to Red as it is always a hassle to get it in and out of South Africa.

For both projects affected, the following settings were used: 4K 16:9 RC36, build 21.4.1.

That looks like a hardware problem. Please contact tech support to have the camera checked out.

I just realised this is the same issue I posted about recently in another thread. Here's my sample (line is extreme left, shot 4.5K using build 30.3.1):

I thought at the time it was temperature related as the camera got glitchy soon after. A shut down and reboot cleared it and I haven't seen it reappear since.

Caleb, did you get a resolution on this from Red? We are just about due to send our camera back for the M-X update, so I figure if it is indeed a hardware issue then I won't worry about it at this point too much, but it would be good to know anyway!

Cheers,

Paul

I have had the same problem. On a handful of takes from a one-day shoot, there are two dotted vertical lines, at roughtly the 1/3rd and 2/3rds across the width. The broken lines seem to be formed of clones of nearby pixels, when the camera pans the 'dot's get brighter/darker and have the same hue as the overall scene.

It was not my camera, and all I can do now is try and repair my shots in AVID.

Hi Paul,

Tested further before sending back to Red and it was definitely related to overheating. When the camera would heat up the problem would appear at first subtly (only visible at 1:1) then eventually dramatically (visible on 5.6" LCD).

I sent the camera back to Red and they replaced my analogue to digital converter, which costed several thousand dollars. Everything has been fine since, and I have also since upgraded to MX, so I'm not sure if an MX upgrade only would have sorted this out (I'm quite sure a new A-D isn't part of the deal).

Good luck, and do get to the bottom of it by testing the camera, doing a long take in the sun with the fan off for about 20 minutes should make the lines appear. Once you do that, the problem will persist until the camera cools off. But it got so bad it was appearing even in interior shoots with the fan on.

I'm wondering the same thing... if an MX upgrade sorts this issue out. I'm always worried about it on set.

Haven't seen this since our upgrade so who knows? The absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence, but so far, so good :)

Cheers,

Paul

we're running into this same issue now. vertical line through the middle of frame, and on the far left side as well. Only appears on several clips from the 3rd and 4th mag of a commercial shoot. Not in every shot, they apparently didn't notice on the day.

Please contact support.
This looks hardware related.
