I never liked the vertical design of camcorders, all comfortable and pro cameras are always been horizontal for good reasons:

  • the weight is better distributed,
  • the lace that keeps your hand in place is more secure,
  • zoom is more comfortable ad precise (as you use two fingers) ,
  • you can use your thumb to push something (usually REC-on/off),
  • when you walk and shoot you can keep it more stabilized and you can look at the left side of the camera where the LCD should be.
  • You can Pan down/left and wright only with the wrist and much more (especially the fact that 99% of people is used to this way).

OK it's a configurable camera but horizontal should be default.

Don't you think?

well, remember that the scarlet (and epic) are designed to be modular and accessories are to be attached to the back of it, creating a more longer feel. The same would apply to the 2/3rd fixed scarlet, and the horizontalness of the camera really depends on how many accessories you decide to buy and attach.

but I do agree with you about vertical designs, its not the best thing in the world for the video world

It all depends on the overall weight and size and whether it is intended to be used handheld or on a tripod.

Generally horizontal makes sense... but the old F900 with a battery and HDSDI box on the back and a zoom out in front was ridiculously long, which was fixed in the F900R by turning the tape vertically and eliminating the need for an HDSDI box.

And if you've ever been on a tripod with the camera backed-up against a wall in a small space, being able to stack elements vertically comes in handy.

When a camera gets tiny enough that shoulder-mounting is physically difficult to arrange, then being more horizontal isn't necessarily an advantage. You may want something tiny like that to be more of a box-shape.

I think we r forgetting something... (slum dog millionair) done by SI 2k mini.
