Hi

We have just upgraded to build 16.3.15 and have "Codec errors" during shooting.

Projectbase: 23.98
Varispeed: 30
Resolution: 4K - 16:9
RedCode 28
RedDrive

Any help appreciated

Did you re-format the drive with the new build? Does it do it on more than one drive?

Hi Jeff,

We format every time we change drive - often, and we are having problems on both drives.

>kenneth

It seems like shifting from 16:9 to 2:1 solved the problem.

Shouldn't you technically be able to do it at 4K 16:9 30 not in 2:1?

Worked fine during testing, but the codec error came back again.
:-(

Getting desperate, studio filled with crew, actors

try 3k

try 3k

If I were you, and it was a shooting situation, I'd punt and try 3K 16:9 and see if it worked. Although you are not doing 36, you are pushing the frame rate limit of the camera at that resolution. Short of losing the day, I'd drop down to 3K and see if it works.

We have tried 3K without luck, but will give RedCode36 a try. Thanks.

Odd that switching to 3K didn't work

This may not be possible, but have you changed lens, or your focus slightly?...as in you might want to try it if you are on set and desperate. I for one have never gotten codec errors, but several people have speculated that it may have something to do with high detail scenes, i.e lens that can resolve more, and lots of sharp detail. Sorry, just throwing that out there. Also disconnect anything and everything that isn't essential for the actual shot. as you never know what might be causing problems. I had the Red lock up on me when I tried to use the HDMI out with a new montior. Again, only suggesting these rather extreme mesausres realtive to losing the day.

I had a similar situation today - codec errors RC28, 4k, 16:9, 23.98fps, CF, b16 3.1.2. Interestingly we only had the codec errors with blown out backgrounds and silhouettes (by design, +3 stops, way blown out). Curious to know what you were shooting?

Hi guys,

We tried everything but it kept on with codec error no matter what. I will come back with more info but know I have to sleep. Me and Kenneth have to try to pull through one more day hahahaha. Not easy when you have 10sec bursts of shooting hahahaha

Luckily it's a commercial with max 4 sec shots hahahaha

I'm not laughing on set though

Will come back with more info on our shoot.

We were shooting green screen which is very well lit. Not blown out but a lot of the times the codec error happens is when there's chinese lanterns above the talents. The well lit green and the lamp highlights has been a thought of mine to be the actual cause. One shot was very difficult where we started with panning in from a lit white poly and a kino - into the green screen set with action in it.

Hmmm let's discuss this further. I will try it out tomorrow on set.

First day of shooting with build 16, had a bright door full frame, and got an error, I stopped down a bit and the error went away....
Kept on shooting whole day without problems, 4K 16:9 RC 28 25fps

So you a getting the codec error even with just the flat screen in the frame? (No high frequency details)

Does the error message say codec error specifically or is it some other error?
Can you please email me the logfile? (d e a n a n at r e d)
