We plan to buy RED One. And We have VelocityHD. We shoot with RED one and export to VelocityHD and edit with VelocityHD 2K??\
thanks

Velocity HD is really geared towards the broadcast market. All I'm going to say is that you are going to have a lot of issues, as everyone here is usually in the fcp/avid/premiere camps.

Hi,

we have four VelocityHD systems running and are the first RED ONE users in germany. We did many projects already, and quite some of them have been editing in VelocityHD. The main obstacle is that you can't read the R3D files natively nor the proxy mov files, which means you had to bulk convert all incoming footage to .ltv first. This is an annoying step as with all workflows outside FCP and Premiere.

It turns out that FCP is therefor better and faster for selecting the right takes. Then you can export and bulk convert only the selected takes, which makes a lot of sense. As VelocityHD 10 (we beta test that currently) is able to read FCP projects, there should be an easy way to step back and forth - but we have not yet tested it (its on my list). In the meantime we help ourselfs with EDL import etc. It works.

One fact is that 100% of our RED shot HD projects have been onlined on VelocityHD, as FCP is simply a bad app in the regard compared to VelocityHD. With VelocityHD we can be absolutely sure about video levels, sync etc. - all things that remain pretty unstable with FCP in our experience.

Couldn't you use clipfinder to make your selects then transcode those? then you would not need FCP.

IF you can stay with VelocityHD over Final Cut do it. It is a far superior and more powerful system and much more intuitive and editor friendly. Too bad they went belly up. I really miss mine. Let us know how it works out cutting RED.

Sam,

they did not really disappear. They just re-branded the tool and sell it under a different pack of names, like NewsEdit etc. Take a look at the harris page and watch out for their editing systems.

In fact I would wish they pave a way for Velocity users to upgrade to these other systems. Its the same software with many additions. Its just that Harris thinks "broadcast" rather than "post production".

Having done a bunch of projects on AVID and FCP, I have to say that VelocityHD remains the top notch of editing to us. Clearly some features are missing there as well, but its a hell rock solid system. Something we can not say about AVID nor FCP in any way. I have seen to many fu**'ed up projects in the past where you can't even export a working EDL anymore. Nothing like this ever happend on Velocity to us.

But yes, Harris really made it a frustrating and ignorant journey...
