  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

V-Raptor XL Preorder is now open, 8K S35 Announced

I am really excited about the XL, this will be the perfect camera for all needs. Something that would make it even better, a similar top plate design and viewfinder like ALEXA35.

It's amazing
how they really thought about every single shooting scenario on ALEXA35. Especially the ability to leave the gimbal top plate on the cameras top plate is amazing.
Unfortunately, I am still not happy about the new RED RMI monitor module design. I think XL will get very tall, because of that module. It was better solved on the Ranger as it had an indentation for the monitor mount and DSMC2 in general had the additional LCD Adaptor A for gimbal use, etc. But if you want to use the new RED Monitor, you have to leave this RMI monitor module on the already big camera...

It would have been perfect if there was a separate USB-C out for the monitor signal.

The issue of no shutter speed/angle slower then 1/23
and no frame rate under 5.99 in motion mode has been a huge issue for me. on my helium I could just use 1fps and any shutter angle up to 360 degrees. The ability to drag the shutter for creative control of motion blur is huge.
If I had known this wouldn’t be fixed I would have never moved to Raptor.

of course the other big one is the timecode reset,
So aggravating on set.

The conflict with EF mount Sigma cine lenses is also a big one.
Crazy the I have to disable communication from the lens to avoid crashing the camera firmware.

I love the image from Raptor and Komodo.
I just wish these issues would be addressed.

What kills me on everything mentioned in those previous pages is that there's no more input from Red here on this forum...
Back in the days, there was heavy criticism about shooting on Red from people who did not know anything about it and when there was a serious issue, via Jim or Jarred on this forum, you knew the team was working on it and you knew what to expect...
Since my first Red One, I always felt like us, Red owners / operators had a special relationship with the brand mostly because of the interaction on Reduser... That feeling vanished those past 12 months.

Sad but perhaps not totally untrue. Red appears more focused on putting out new cameras than fixing the issues on the existing cameras. This is clearly tarnishing the Red brand. You can try to prevent people from speaking out about this; But ultimately people will voice their opinions with their wallets.

Our RED V-Raptor ( and KOMODO ) is still unusable because our company has focused on anamorphic lenses.
We are still working with our old Gemini DSMC2 ( 5 pcs )
We planned to upgrade from DSMC2 brains to DSMC3 and buy an additional 2-3 pcs of the V-RAPTOR
But now we are not sure that we will buy it.

Out of curiousty Malk, I own several 2X, 1.8X, and 1.5X anamorphic. When you say "unusable", do you mean because you don't have access to more resolutions/formats when filming in anamorphic for more frame rate options?

Straight from the box V-Raptor has tremendous anamorphic support in 8K, 7K, and 6K. 2X through 1.33X - VV and S35 formats. Oddly V-Raptor is what inspired more anamorphic purchases for me.

I honestly don’t think I would want internal NDs after using Breakthrough’s mount and VNDs. They are glorious. Really just a waiting game until they have them fully available. I’m sure the built in ND on the XL is excellent though.

how is the wireless TC setup going to work. Setup to only work with specific external boxes I would imagine?

Gemini is still the better choice for anamorphic in my opinion.
and the stitched sensor issue is also @6k using raptor, right? If so the raptor not usable.

Yes. On Facebook and IG he said that his test concluded he wants to begin catering to the OG Redusers once again, with this camera. He said he wants to focus on like, all the people that believed in Red over the years and still do- instead of like, the yotubers and 24 year olds and 21 year olds on instargam.

What that means I dont know but it sounds like the right thing!!!

Sounds like he intends to take this camera up market. With the new sensor and built in VNDs. He might plan a $30K plus price tag? Not too many people in their early twenties that can drop $30K on a camera.

Its not just about Price, its about what the "OG" RED users really want. I know personally I could care less about high frame rates or night vision. I want PL mount, I want reliability, and I want better DR, and Color. A lot of us who RED got young are now maturing in our professions and would love to bring RED along on our Professional career journeys, but RED hasn't matured along with us. They are like the guys you made video with in college, but sadly you can still find at the same watering holes 10 years later - while still out shooting Super slowmo skateboarding videos.. That's the problem. I own two Monstros, and I stared with RED Scarlet. I never had less interest in buying another RED in my life. I am ready to order the new Alexa 35 and say its been nice knowing you. Its a shame, RED got a lot of us into the industry, and I want to stay friends, but its sad to see a 30 something still hanging out at the old college bar.

"OG" RED users

Right now it's a game of missing pieces as far as I'm concerned. Squarely the Raptor XL is the real competition in terms of body type, price, and features to the Alexa 35 with current unknowns. Namely the EVF. And I do like ARRI's EVF/flip out screen combo, new bracket is really slick too. Whatever is going on and if it ends up being RMI or SDI based (or both?) is going to be critical. Wouldn't mind a combo unit EVF and small screen either.

V-Raptor XL gets you into bolt on PL mounts, likely good things like /i data, and some very nice things like wireless timecode. For those of us doing virtual stage work and all of those things, a lot going right there, including the phase control we have now even. Might be dual voltage like Ranger, or not. Plus we'll have to see how solid that internal ND system is. I have yet to tinker with one, but that is where the actual "production camera fight" is in my mind. V-Raptor is focused on still being compact and able to be built small. Sort of the DSMC2 body versus Ranger thing, just with the weirdness being the mount variation this round, which I do agree has been a point of contention mainly due to the variety of adapters out there and really only a few being worth the money IMO. That should have been a day one RED product in my mind either way. I've expressed my opinion on that matter to the best of my ability.

Color and DR we have with this new sensor/hardware and IPP2 has done a lot right, I'll make the argument we've had it for a while and I've been shooting astonishing stuff with Monstro prior to V-Raptor, even ARRI is now navigating towards a more IPP2-like workflow this with their new color pipeline and LogC4, while also fixing some critical things. Big improvement with the filter stack as well on V-Raptor, which personally is one of the bigger ones for me. Literally day one eyes open "nice" moment there.

Being a bit patient myself to see what the whole XL package ends up being. Spoke to several rental houses who are also sort of in standby mode there.

No problem saying the Alexa 35 is the best Alexa you can buy/use right now in terms of IQ. Oddly bringing more unity than division than one might think when it comes to workflow on projects that might be using other cameras.

Things are a little up in the air regarding the RED E-ND. We don't know it's stop range. Hoping we get good 1-6 stops. Would be wonderful if 8-10 was within reach of the tech. Twiddling my thumbs until I can get a close look at one.

I think I'm also in the situation where I'm actually delivering 8K regularly which certainly is impacting a lot of my decisions as well, which I wouldn't say is mass market just yet, but everything last year was 8K with 8K and 4K finals. ARRI's next camera in 2-3 years will have to tackle that.
