Hey Guys,

Our group burns through AA batteries like crazy on the Sound Devices MixPre-6. I'd like to find a better solution for powering the recorder on long shoots without AC power. I know there are sled adapters and Sony L battery adapters. I'd rather not have to buy so many different types of batteries. We have plenty of V-Mount power on hand. Is there a good solution to power the MixPre-6 from a V-Mount battery? Has anyone had luck with this?

Thanks!

I have had the same problem and ended up going to Sony L because I had some available. AA's are useless with Mix-Pre 3, 6 & 10 but maybe you could try rechargeable lithium AA's? They will last longer. Alternately, you can run it off the camera like I do with the Mix Pre 3 but I can imagine you mightn't want it always attached there. Funnily enough I can run that little recorder off the USB input as well! But your best bet would be to use camera batteries for the 6, either directly depending if they have an output connector or buy a V-lock sled to Hirose connector? I think the Mix Pre 6 is 10-18volts like the 10 but you will want to check that.

Not very helpful I'm afraid.

Another reason I wish Sound Devices made a dedicated module.

troyword: any photos of that Mix Pre 6 strapped to the Red?

This is my "one man band" doc set up. It allows me to shoot with double system audio on the run. It works pretty good as you get all the benefits of the amazing pre amps on the sound devices. Which save my backside when the sound levels jump around. You will never blow out your audio track with the amazing analog limiters. I feed the stereo out into the Red cam for reference and back up in case I forget to start the recorder(there is no HDMI trigger for the Red) or if there is a card failure. I then use plural eyes for post sync. I can easily add wireless lav's and or a wireless boom mic as well for interview set ups. So far it has worked great in some pretty tough conditions.

Great photos! Think I'll snag the MixPre-6 myself now after seeing that. Have a Zoom F8 I am thinking of selling to get into Sound Designs' world.

Another reason why I wish SD made a dedicated module, or RED would internalize it.

It would be my recommendation to not use V mount to power your audio recorder, as V mount batteries are heavy to be loading up your bag with all day long. Think of your poor soundie's back! But then again, if you're not running it in an audio mixing bag then I suppose saving weight doesn't matter so much at all.

Why? What are you doing? Personally I'd rather have a Zoom F8n than a MixPre6.

Mix Pre 3 Rig

Mix Pre 3 Rig

I mount a Mix Pre 3 on the back of V-lock PAGS, this example is of course missing cables. But the recorder carries either its own NP-L's or is connected to the D-tap. I know it's not a Mix Pre 6 but I seldom have need for so many channels onboard, certainly not more than three.

I use IDX v-mount batts that have USB ports on them. Easy to power the mixpre6 via USB a dive found it easily runs all day on one 150wh battery.
