Hi.

I'm looking into using Premiere for my next project to avoid exporting out ProRes and dealing with the conforming process. The project will be finished in 3K, but it'll be shot mostly in 4K, partially so that I can use the "look-around room" to reframe shots, etc.

I'm looking for a way to essentially use a frame guide that shows me the 4K framing outside of the working 3K space (or the reverse, 3K framed inside a 4K project). Something similar to what happens when you turn on "Safe Margins," but showing the differing resolutions.

Sorry if the wording is a little confusing, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks David!

I actually did not write the above post but I did help the guy who did to try and figure out a solution for the project we are working on. What I did (before we posted) was to open up photoshop at and create a new project at 4k resolution. I then created a 3k crop mark in the center of the frame with the intention of putting that into premiere.

That worked for a little while during testing until we realized this issue: Its the top thing in the timeline, so when you click in the canvas you're clicking on the empty space of the psd, and therefore selecting it. So if you want to manipulate the footage under it you need to hide it, essentially loosing the ability to use it as a guide which is what we wanted to do.

We were hoping that we could have the 4k file in the 3k timeline so when we were manipulating the 4k file we would have a reference in the canvas window of where the 4k frame was supposed to end, so we'd know if we were zooming passed 4k file resolution and therefore loosing quality. Is there a way to get this functionality in the preferences we are missing? Please excuse the ignorance, we are moving from FCP7.

Its easy enough to drop a 4K clip into a 3K timeline, but you won't have that look-around.

One workaround would be to work in a 4K window, put your 3K frame guide on the bottom of the stack and lock it in place ,and then edit/zoom your 4Ks at will... if you reveal anny portion of the 3k Frame guide at any time, you've pushed the 4K frame too far.

When you are done, you can EITHER drop the edited 4K timeline into a NEW 3K timeline for output, or copy the entire contents of the 4K timeline and paste them into a new 3K timeline. Both options are really easy to execute.

Thanks CK! I'm going to give that a try, sounds like the best solution for this project. Kinda wish there were frame guides built into CS.5.5 ... any CS6 developers out there listening?
