  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

using the A-box with scarlet, should I set the camera to unbalanced or balanced?

Hey there, I'm trying to figure out which settings are best for recording directly on the scarlet.

I have the wooden camera a-box with a shotgun mic plugged into one xlr input and a wireless lav mic in the other. I'm confused as to which setting i'm supposed to use, both unbalanced and balanced seem to work when imported into premiere (although for some reason the sync is off when playing in redcine-x).

also I'd like to record onto a zoom h4n as a backup, how are people getting audio out on the camera? do i just use the headphone line out?

any help would be much appreciated!

as far as I know the A-Box just converts from XLR to minijack, so the audio should be balanced ...

MOst of the vendors assuming 3.5minijack as totally unbalanced type of connection - double-check it if you can. Any cables I already bought to be an XLR-minijack conversion wired as "balanced - to - dual mono", but if you familiar with soldering not a big deal to re-wire it, takes 2 minutes ;)

The A-Box is properly wired to pass balanced audio. That means that the answer to your question depends on what you are feeding into the A-box. If you feed it a balanced source, it will arrive at the camera balanced. But if the source is unbalanced, the A-box will not magically make it balanced. It'll just pass along what it was given. Make sense?

I can't help you with the Zoom, as I've never had one in my hands. But the only choice for audio passthrough on the camera is the headphone out.

You are doing it backwards from the normal configuration. Feed mics directly into your mixer/recorder. Send audio from there to your scarlet. Even the H4N records audio at least as clean, if not cleaner than the Scarlet/Epic. Red is still has some work to do reducing internal noise/hums in the cameras.

Camera audio should be considered as back-up, and your third-party audio recorder is primary.
