  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I recently bought a Scarlet, after using RED ONE MX for about a year.
I have few questions, hope someone could help :

- the camera fan is very loud. It is currently set in the camera menu to AUTO, but it makes a really disturbing humming noise. Is there a way to set it manual to a safe value ?
- Does someone professionally use the AF features of Scarlet ? When I set the lens to AF - there's no way to use a normal follow focus... Futhermore, the AF is not so fast and precise like for example Canon's 5d series....
- is it possible to assign a userkey to make LCDs overlays dissapear and extend the active camera view ?
- is there a way to move the magnify window (before or after magnifying process) ?
- is it normal that the LCD hangs out (turns black) while using magnifying function?
- I'm used to set 4k 16:9 on my R1MX. Which Scarlet's resolution has similar proportions 4k or 4kHD ?

thank You in advance ;)

Konrad

Choose one of the adaptive modes for sound. I set my max record speed to 30-35% and my temperature target to 65 degrees. Works great and is quiet.

Continuous AF is not ready for prime time, IMO. I will use AF to focus and refocus via the touchscreen, though. And the rack focus works well.

Not absolutely sure about overlays but you can assign a whole lot of things to user keys so I'd guess you could do this. Use the RED app for this. Works great.

Hate to give half answers but, yes you can move magnify window... just can't remember exactly how right now. I think the scroll wheels on Side Handle and REDmote do it.

If you mean "turns black" for a second while switching, yes. Otherwise, not sure what you mean.

4KHD is 16:9. Native resolution is 1.89. You can work from there in post, of course.

Hope that helps. I am sure others will join in with some more detail.

thank You Terry, very informative answer ;) .

I've set FAN mode do ADAPTIVE and set the target temp to 65deg (it is safe for the cam?) .
The fan it's dead quiet now . But can't set the max recording speed in this mode, it's disabled.

Once I set AF to one of the automatic modes, it's hard to refocus it during recording with FF.
So either got to use AF or manual follow focus, am I right ?

"turns black" and stays black. Only shutdown helps. It happened yesterday. Have the cam for about 2-3 days now ....

I set the FAN mode back to Auto, because I've noticed that LCD started slightly flicker in the shadows.
BTW: What is the difference between 30hz and 60hz refreshing frequency on Brain LCD ? On 60hz flickerin g was gone.

You can not use a follow focus if you set the camera to auto-focus, the camera will constantly fight your adjustments.

The 30/60 HZ refresh is set to your preference, if you see flicker at 30hz the set it to 60HZ.

Adaptive fan mode puts the camera in full control of the fan speed; it adjusts the fan speed a very granular increments to match the cooling requirements of the camera. (Both faster and slower)

In Auto Fan mode the camera will suddenly switch the max fan speed, such can be very disruptive while recording a take.

You can set the magnify area by touching the LCD screen in the are you are focusing on. The rectangle in the center of the screen will move to the area that you touch,; that rectangle is whAt the camera uses for determining auto focus and magnification.

I just want to set the fan quieter, and not destroy the camera. Is ADAPTIVE mode and temperature target set to 65 deg. OK ?

Try the other adaptive mode (can never remember the name, maybe Adaptive Preview?). Then you can set the temp and the max recording %). I wouldn't switch it back because of the flicker, that isn't likely to be the problem. Look elsewhere.

Yes, you either use manual or auto. You can't mix them.

No, LCD turning black is not normal. lol Try a different cable check connections, whatever. Something is wrong.

It doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong ?;)

If you have the side handle you can move the magnify and focus box by pressing the "down" arrow inside the scroll wheel to activate it and then use the other arrows to move it where ever you like.

You aren't going to destroy the camera with any of your fan settings. It will automatically shut down once the temperature reaches 75 degrees C (the temp will turn yellow - orange - red as it increases). That said Adaptive mode seems to be the favorite setting for most. I set it at 65 degrees and never worry about it.

You can set the menus to "auto-hide" in the settings which will do exactly as it says. They will come back on screen when you touch the LCD or one of the side buttons.

What Firmware is on the camera? Update to the latest official release -- 5.1.55... Honestly, the fan defaults to Adaptive 65c *on Dragon* (on Scarlet-X it's "Auto"... thanks Stephen), so I'm not sure why it wasn't set to that (unless you're running an old firmware).

Also, check the manual. There are tons of nice tips/tricks in there to get the most out of the camera. You should blackshade and learn how to set user keys and all kinds of stuff.

Scarlet defaults to Auto fans on that firmware, Epic Dragon to adoptive.

Set to 65, leave camera for 30 minutes & do a black shading. If the camera temperature lights change from green if the camera gets hotter drop the target temperature 3 degrees & the lights will go back to green very quickly. If the camera is running too cold raise target temp a few degrees.

thanks! It works fine.
Another thing is spining the focus ring when camera booting up. Doesn't it damage the follow focus if the FF works with a little bit resistance ? Can I turn it off ? I'm working with manual AF only...

I've updated it to 5.2.21, I didn't make the black shading, because they wrote in the relase info: black shading necessary only for Epic Dragon /Scarlet Dragon.

@Stephen: thanks for the heads up about the fan default (irony is I have a Scarlet, not a Dragon).

Konrad, it's good practice to do a blackshade after updating the firmware... Just one of those things to get the cleanest image possible (you can save the UserHS blackshade to your mag and reapply after the update). Also bare in mind 5.2.21 is a beta firmware, not a release build, so you may want to have a readily available copy of the release build (5.1.55) to go to if 5.2.21 gets wonky on a shoot. Conversely, the beta builds rarely have issues that are that severe, unless you're using features that have yet to be finalized.

The lens racks when booting up because you have AF enabled somewhere. You should set it to manual only on both the lens and the camera (unless the lens is one of those ones that has full-time manual override and not a AF/M switch... though I thought they all had a switch.) But, yes, it probably isn't good for the lens' motor to be pushing/pulling the attached FF on boot up.

I've set the lens to manual, it's fixed now;)
I try to blackshade the cam, thx!
