Using RCX from FCPX for archiving

I have lots of R3Ds in my archive.
Since I need only parts of them - but something from all of them - I want to save R3Ds using RCX.
But using RCX for that is sooo sloooow.
Therefore I want to use FCPX for a quick edit of clips, then export and XML or EDL (difference?) to later get the proper color grading in RCX.

Please tell me how to manage this workflow.

Maybe I need a more powerful computer, but it would be nice to manage it somehow with the stuff I already have.

TIA

Sverker

Add all the trimmed clips to a project in fcpx. Export XML (use version 1.7 not 1.8). Import xml into redcine. Select all clips in timeline in redcine and drag to a bin. Export all clips in bin from redcine using R3D trim.

Edit: you should be fine on a slower computer. R3D trim is fast. And you can make proxies in fcpx for fast playback.

Thank you, Robert! I finally got it working - after moving from Mac Mini to Powerbook. No idea why not on the Mini, I will check it out later.

For now, I am happy not having to move to daVinci Resolve. For some time I got the impression that FCPX couldn't do this, since I have not on YouTube seen any video for this workflow with FCPX, only for Resolve ...

Thanks!

So, I can manage to keep only the good parts of clips, thereby reduce archival space.

But -

- how to rotate a clip?

In RCX only 90° rotations seems to be possible. Rotating the clip in FCPX does not rotate the XML.

- how to do framing?

I want to get UHDs from the original 4608x2160s. Both in the Edit view and the Export view I could change resolution, but the saved file is not framed according to my settings.

Could you save me again, Robert?

Hi Sverker. You can't scale the raw to a different resolution - it will always be the same resolution that it was shot at. If you want to scale and rotate you will have to bring the trimmed clips back into FCP and do it there. If you want UHD rotated clips you will need to export to a different codec eg you could export in prores from FCPX. Hope that helps.

Hi, Robert. That´s a pity, since I want to send my Clips to Pond5 and it seems that I could charge more for R3Ds.

But I can still do the grading in RCX if I need to.

I have for some time used the UHD resolution, "wasting" resolution on the sensor which is 4608 wide. But recording in max resolution in the Red Raven could useful when composing the clip before the final export.

I still have some learning to do, obviously.

Thanks, Robert.

Perhaps do a bit of colour correction in Redcine and then export trimmed r3ds. Then bring the r3ds into fcp and adjust horizon, etc then export. Then upload both the r3d and the prores versions to pond5? Then people will have both options. Some people might not want raw files.

Hi, Robert! Have been thinking of that. Some will not like R3Ds, I get it. But Pond5 does not want uploads larger than 6 GB. I will see if I can have both 4,6K R3D and UHD.mov in one 60s upload.

Exciting problems ...
