When putting a production together that uses music from EMI, BMI or ASCAP, do you approach those companies directly, or do you use a copyright administrator to arrange royalty payments, etc.? If so, can you recommend a good company?

In this case, it is a DVD showing a musician playing copyrighted music. I don't mind paying the sync/mechanical rates.

Thanks,
Phil

I forgot to mention, this is a small production, with distribution of less than 5000 units.

Thanks,
P

Used to be the Harry Fox agency handled all film synchronization rights. Now there are multiple agencies that handle the process. The rights have to be secured from the composer or copyright owner directly for the songs, if you use recorded works, additional rights have to be secured from the copyright owner of the recording or performance too.
ASCAP/BMI/EMI license public performance rights, not synchronization rights.

One agency that popped up on a search:

I've had great luck with David Powell at The Music Bridge. Flat fee for chasing rights and getting all the paperwork done - he makes it real easy, he's been doing it for 25 years, and he has it down. We use him for small pieces with limited dist as well.

he is at 310-398-9650, david@themusicbridge.com
